Description Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is an independent policy institute based in London. Chatham House’s work on the environment, carried out throughout the House but focussed in its Environment and Society Centre (ESC), provides governments, businesses and societies with the information, networks, and tools to tackle environmental challenges and advance the world towards a sustainable future. We analyse and inform international processes, convene diverse perspectives, and bring new ideas into the international arena. In this role, you’ll play an integral part in the executive team that leads the Centre, working closely with other programme directors and the leadership of Chatham House overall. There may be scope for early progression in this role in terms of leadership of environmental work at the institute. You will contribute to developing the strategic direction of Chatham House’s work, ensuring that it produces high quality analysis on environmental and sustainability questions and shaping international debates. The core of our environmental work focuses on risks arising from climate change and the transition towards sustainability with particular focus on energy and food systems. We have a strong workstream on natural resources and land use as a result. You will bring substantial expertise to the role, with a strong technical command of energy and climate policy, energy sector decarbonization and arguments and analysis around climate mitigation and adaptation. Given that Chatham House’s focus is on international relations, you will have developed authority in the analysis of the geopolitics and international relations of this area. You will have cultivated high level contacts in government and companies in many countries, in particular China, and have experience in fund raising from many kinds of organisations including foundations. You will help the Centre to collaborate with research programmes and initiatives across Chatham House, in keeping with our practice of linking our regional expertise with our strength in thematic analysis. With a talent for leadership and management, you will generate ideas, cultivate talent, and support a diverse range of staff. You will have a keen “problem-solving” approach to the agenda, and be able to display a skill in framing questions appropriate for Chatham House to ask – and answer. Work with the Centre’s Director to ensure structure and work plans provide the team with a clear research direction and that team members understand how they contribute to our purpose and mission. Develop a detailed strategy to address the transition of the energy sector to carbon neutrality, and explore the geo-political and geo-strategic implications of this. Identify influential and high profile speakers to promote Chatham House recommendations and convene influential and diverse discussions. Use existing and new networks to fundraise for the Centre and for Chatham House. Represent and promote the Centre and Chatham House at meetings. Support the contributions of Associate Fellows and other associated researchers, ensuring they are fully integrated into programme objectives. Delivery Collaborate with colleagues to lead and produce sector leading policy-relevant research on the energy transition and climate policy, and their links to geopolitics and international affairs. Generate impact by providing leadership and support to convening, research and dissemination, utilizing your knowledge of the topic and your existing network. Help ensure quality control of convening, research outputs, maintaining and improving existing high standards and continuously improving quality across the Centre. Identify and pursue opportunities for appropriate communication and dissemination of research findings, through seminars, workshops, and other channels, communicating precisely and effectively. Raise the Centre’s profile through development of strong networks in relevant areas with policymakers, policy experts and the media, and ensuring projects gain appropriate publicity and visibility for activities and research through the website, social media, and other media channels. Speak, where necessary, on behalf of the institute. Initiate and lead funding applications across a broad spectrum of relevant issues. Work with the Director and Assistant Director to manage resources efficiently to ensure adequate funds to deliver research including the preparation of funding applications, in consultation and collaboration with other teams in Chatham House. People Ensures that team members understand their roles and how they contribute to the wider Research Centre strategy and goals. Empower and build a positive working culture for all staff to thrive, ensuring good practice is shared and Chatham House standards of behaviours are followed. Establish productive positive relationships across the organization, operating as a contributing member of the research community. Maintain strong and long-lasting relationships with foundations, government funding departments, corporate sponsors, and other significant funding sources. Establish and maintain a network of contacts with relevant individuals and organizations within the energy, climate, and international affairs policy space. Personal Specification An established and influential leader on energy and climate policy, and its link with geopolitics and international affairs, especially in key countries of interest, including China. Excellent knowledge of broader, interlinked policy debates on environmental and sustainability issues including food and natural resource use, sustainable finance, and the circular economy. A proficient author with a consistent record of successfully leading the delivery of substantial research outputs. An effective fundraiser with a track record of securing financial support from an established network of philanthropic foundations, government departments, international organisations, businesses, and NGOs. A strong track record on engaging with and influencing policymakers and decision makers in organisations of influence. An interest to broaden expertise and willingness to contribute leadership in areas outside your core expertise but within the scope of the Centre. Ability to successfully develop, lead and motivate large teams and to inspire and support collaboration internally. A creative problem solver, with the curiosity to explore new approaches, topics and ideas and the skills to both think deeply and explore new ways of thinking.
