Job overview
The Design Development of Operations Lead is a key role leading the improvement and modernisation of operational services across the business to provide an efficient, customer focussed services and transformation of the Synnovis Pathology network.
You will work closely with Transformation Leads, Project Managers and Senior Managers across the organisation covering Laboratories, Estates, Logistics and IT. Confirming how the future laboratories will function.
You will be working with senior managers across Synnovis, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals, King’s College Hospital, Princess Royal University Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals and local CCG networks. A key part of the role will also require engaging with key external suppliers.
A large amount of job satisfaction is gained from being able to lead on designing new laboratory spaces at an early stage right though to implementation. This involves creating floor plans, process maps, workflow diagrams, resource and equipment capacity assessments.

Main duties of the job
Support for the improvement, modernisation, and operational excellence of services, including continuous service improvement, reorganisation and laboratory consolidations which improve outcomes and support the delivery of Synnovis clinical strategies and achieve value for money.
· Provide End to End solution design.
· Design the reconfiguration of laboratory working practices and the skills mix of resource to achieve on-going optimum flexibility in the workforce.
· Present complex data, workflow, floor plans to senior leadership teams.
· Review new market trends or analytical platforms to ensure best practice is implemented within operational solutions.
· Engage with all key departments – Laboratory operations, Transformation, Finance, HR and Procurement
· Engaged with external stakeholders including Trusts.
· Co-ordinating input from broad, multi-disciplinary project teams to ensure effective delivery of projects, including the management of changing demands and pressures.
· The ability to make judgments on limited information against tight timescales and despite conflicting demands from different stakeholder groups is a key requirement of the role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. Currently our offices are based in Paris Garden, Blackfriars SE1, or Francis House, Southwark SE1 however at present these are temporary locations. We expect to move to new offices in the Hub building located in Blackfriars in 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities
The post holder reports to the Director of Design Development of Operations across the full range of their duties and responsibilities and is required to provide leadership to the designated areas of responsibility.
They will support the improvement and modernisation of operational services across the business to provide an efficient, customer focussed services.
They will lead operational teams and deploy project management and change management expertise for supporting operational managers on the planning, structuring, design, delivery and identification of modernisation and consolidation projects.
Service Design and Development
Support for the improvement, modernisation, and operational excellence of services, including continuous service improvement, reorganisation and laboratory consolidations which improve outcomes and support the delivery of Synnovis’s clinical strategies and achieve value for money.
Provide End to End solution design
· Have a strong background in equipment modelling and be able to influence operational teams regarding the most optimised/efficient layouts
· Utilise data to create resource models including various shift patterns
· Work with the operational teams to pull together optimised process maps in Visio
· Use Visio to create comprehensive floor plans and workflows that will feed into Scope of Works and construction plans
· Reviewing large scale datasets to understand workload volumes, to calculate capacity to bring-in additional work, or improve profitability in existing contracts, as well as ensuring best fit solutions are deployed
· Quantify benefits of proposed new processes or solutions
Present complex data, workflow, floor plans to senior leadership teams.
Review new market trends or analytical platforms to ensure best practice is implemented within operational solutions.
Engage with all key departments – Laboratory operations, Transformation, Finance, HR and Procurement
Engaged with external stakeholders including Trusts
Continue to develop greater and wider understanding of the concepts, methodologies, skills and techniques involved in service improvement and transfer these onto others as required.
Project Management
Co-ordinating input from broad, multi-disciplinary project teams to ensure effective delivery of projects, including the management of changing demands and pressures.
Provide expertise to projects, including:
· Project scoping and building business cases
· Examination, analysis and developing solutions
· Benefits identification and tracking
· Project preparation
· Process re-design and implementation of modernisation initiatives
Ensure all project plans are realistic, responsible for implementation / delivery are owned and the schedule of benefits delivery is congruent with financial budgeting process.
Develop relationships and influence to ensure ownership of transformation is achieved.
Utilise the core tools and techniques of transformation, and the project management framework of the business and apply these to projects.
Produce clear visual material, project documentation, and data for use in reports, local briefings, workshops and meetings for both internal and external presentations.
Leadership and organisation development
Design the reconfiguration of laboratory working practices and the skills mix of resource to achieve on-going optimum flexibility in the workforce to service anticipated and existing work patterns.
Deal with external stakeholders as an ambassador for Synnovis regarding services and operational issues.
Performance Management
Keep the Director of Design Development of Operations up to date with regular performance and exception reporting.
Proactively identify areas where our service delivery can be improved.
Processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Ensure the governance process in the management of change is followed with by all parties and escalated through the proper governance routes.
Communication and Relationships:
The ability to make judgments on limited information against tight timescales and despite conflicting demands from different stakeholder groups is a key requirement of the role.
Ensure operational teams are kept up to date with process and service areas that need improvement and plans to improve them.

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
MSc Biomedical Science (or related subject)
Documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Lean six sigma qualification

Proven track record of operational management experience in an acute complex pathology service environment
Track record of End-to-End solution design
Have a strong background in equipment modelling, resource modelling, floor plan creation and optimisation of workflows
Able to influence operational teams regarding the most optimised/efficient layouts
Experience of working with external platform suppliers
Value stream mapping
Current and future states, process mapping, process flow, algorithms
