Head of Health & Safety
Octopus Energy
Description
At Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN), we're passionate about powering a sustainable future. As pioneers in the renewable energy space, we don’t just invest in utility-scale projects; we invest in people, communities, and a greener tomorrow. Since stepping into the renewables arena in 2010, we've made waves—becoming a top investor in onshore wind across mainland Europe, the largest backer of solar power in Europe, and now, we're diving into offshore wind with equal enthusiasm. Today, we proudly manage over £7bn in renewable energy assets worldwide. Our dynamic portfolio includes over three hundred major energy-generating companies, from wind farms to solar power plants, with exciting new ventures in energy storage and hydrogen on the horizon. As we continue to grow, we're looking for passionate individuals to join our diverse and dedicated team, helping us drive the future of renewable energy forward. We’re looking for an exceptional Head of Health and Safety to join our team, ensuring the health and safety of our people, partners, and assets while embedding a culture of proactive risk management and continuous improvement.
What You'll Do Lead all aspects of health and safety across our portfolio, acting as the go-to expert for ensuring compliance, setting strategic direction, and driving a positive safety culture. Be the focal point for our investment boards, providing clarity and insights on safety performance and risks. Build and maintain a comprehensive health and safety management system that supports our business and aligns with legal requirements. Manage key relationships across our business and third-party providers, ensuring alignment with Octopus Energy Group’s strategy and cultural expectations. Communicate complex risks effectively to senior internal management and external stakeholders (Funds). Provide calm and confident leadership during crises, bringing strong crisis management expertise to high-pressure situations. Understand the nuances of large-scale, complex projects and collaborate with experts where needed. Collect, analyse, and report on safety data, preparing actionable insights for board-level reporting. Champion a culture of continuous improvement, working across teams to identify opportunities and deliver innovative solutions. What You'll Need Chartered membership of IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health). A minimum NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety, with a MSc or relevant degree preferred. At least 10 years of experience in health and safety roles, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership position. Extensive experience in renewable energy or large-scale, complex industries. Expertise in crisis management and the ability to remain calm and lead decisively in high-pressure situations. Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, from project teams to board members. A collaborative mindset, with the ability to work across teams and geographies while aligning with Octopus Energy Group’s cultural values. Flexibility and adaptability – this is not a 9-to-5 role, and international travel will be required. A solutions-focused approach and the ability to wear multiple hats across different renewable technologies. Proven ability to adapt global health and safety principles to UK operations, maintaining compliance with local legislation while incorporating international best practices. Strong construction experience from a client’s perspective, ensuring compliance with UK regulations such as Construction Design and Management and overseeing the implementation of effective safety measures across large-scale, complex projects.
