The Role: As Principal Environment Officer (Air Quality), you can make your own powerful contribution to the future of Westminster. As a council, we are focused on becoming net zero carbon by 2030, and the city of Westminster by 2040. Our ambitions are underpinned by our Climate Emergency Action Plan, which outlines the steps we are taking to meet our ambitious target. You will play a vital role in helping to deliver the commitments set out in our emerging Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan in both leading and supporting roles. You will help to promote and supporting activity in this space and manage and monitor the progress of action delivery, working with teams and partners across the council. The emerging Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan focuses on several key pollution sources, so you’ll be involved in supporting work across several areas, notably the built environment, clean energy, and sustainable transport. As our understanding of how to tackle poor air quality alongside our wider environmental ambitions improves, the Action Plan will continue to develop - you’ll have the opportunity to be a part of this process and contribute new suggestions. You will help to build our evidence to support these decisions and use your own experience to put forward recommendations. Building effective partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders will be vital to successfully delivering our plan, and you’ll have the opportunity to get involved with community engagement and outreach. As part of the core Environment Delivery team, you play an important part in ensuring that the Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan is delivered effectively, whilst supporting and inspiring others to join us on our journey. Please refer to the Job Description for more information. About You: You will support the delivery of the Climate Emergency programme in a variety of ways. You’ll have the opportunity to lead the delivery of air quality actions and work packages, managing timelines, milestones, risks & issues. You’ll work with different teams across the council, providing support to help them achieve their environmental climate objectives. You’ll engage with both internal and external stakeholders, helping to increase awareness of air quality action and the associated Climate Emergency programme. You’ll work with council staff to consider what actions they can build into their day to day and connect with Westminster’s communities to help encourage collaborative action. You’ll contribute towards strategic programme directives and provide insight to assist with decision making. You’ll have the opportunity to further develop your own expertise and build the teams knowledge. A passion for air quality and environmental sustainability is welcomed, though we’re confident that if you have the right skills and experience to help positive action, then you’ll be a great fit for our team. The Council is committed to achieving diverse shortlists to support our desire to increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce.
