The Quality team at Synnovis are pleased to advertise an exciting opportunity for a Senior Quality Manager to lead the Haematology, Blood Transfusion (BT) and Point of Care Testing (POCT) quality team. The successful applicant will join a dynamic quality team based across all Synnovis operating sites.
This is an excellent opportunity well suited to someone with a background in Blood Transfusion, motivated by continuous improvement, quality assurance and making a difference.
You will work closely with the Service Development Managers, Strategic Clinical Leads and Operational Leads to ensure the effective development and implementation of the quality management system.
You will have HCPC State registration as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist. You will hold an MSc, FIBMS or equivalent experience in a similar role, as well a significant Quality Manager experience.
Main duties of the job
This managerial role is vital to the clinical governance and risk management of the laboratory services you support. You will ensure these laboratory services are meeting ISO 15189 standards and will supervise UKAS accreditation for each area. You will lead in the
development of strategic quality policies for these laboratory services to support the clinical
and senior teams. You will have a high level of responsibility to ensure the successful delivery of pathology services, in line with our corporate objectives.
The Haematology, BT and POCT Services at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, King’s College Hospital (Denmark Hill and PRUH sites) and Royal Brompton and Harefield sites are UKAS accredited to ISO15189:2012 and the services are in the process of transitioning to the 2022 standard. These services are comprised of a large team of staff consisting of Service Delivery Managers, Clinical Scientists, Operational Managers, Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants. Transformational work is in progress to consolidate and align processes into the new target operating model with the new Blackfriars Hub laboratory. Development of new Essential Service Laboraties (ESL) will ensure the service operates urgent diagnostic testing across all clinical sites.
At this exciting time and alongside this transformational work, the Quality team is transitioning and adapting to support the haematology, BT and POCT services. Newly adapted roles in the Quality team include a Senior Quality Manager, Quality Managers and Quality Officers working together to support Haematology, BT and POCT Services.
The key quality priorities are to ensure the quality and competence requirements for ISO 15189:2022 are achieved, to maintain all quality, regulatory and safety requirements, ensure the future/TOM accreditation application (ETS) and ongoing quality monitoring and risk management processes.

The quality department currently uses QPulse for management of the QMS, has access to Epic Beaker LIMS and utilises Trust Incident management systems InPhase and RADAR.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London.
You will hold a variety of accountabilities in the laboratory environment. These include, but are not limited to:
· Manage quality assurance across multiple service lines encompassing several disciplines.
· Support and improve pathology services by delivering the Synnovis quality strategy, including working alongside managers to implement quality improvement plans, evaluate services with teams, and ensure all services are of a high quality and compliant with legislative requirements.
· Lead compliance with internal, national, and international regulations in every aspect of practice development. Guide, develop and maintain Quality Assurance and control systems to ensure pathology data integrity.
· Manage key relationships with all relevant external accreditation, inspection and regulatory bodies ensuring Synnovis is responsive to changing requirements and complies with all relevant standards and policies.
· Ensure Synnovis is properly prepared for regulatory inspections and accreditation assessments, and, that all documentation and quality evidence is stored, maintained and accessible in the required format.
· Collaborate with colleagues and senior managers to ensure consistency in the delivery of Quality Management, including playing a leading role in the development of best practices and new ways of working.
· Line manage Quality Managers and Quality Officers, this includes delivering all aspects of people management, such as recruitment, performance management, absence management, learning and development, employee health and wellbeing.
· Ensure the delivery of all performance requirements, as identified through the Quality Strategy.
· Demonstrate professionalism, patience and empathy when explaining highly complex subjects, and in particular when communicating with people who do not share same level of knowledge or understanding.
· Deputise for the Head of Quality, attending monthly quality and clinical governance meetings, as needed.
· Undertake specific projects under the direction of the Head of Quality and/or the Medical Director.
· Take part in CPD activities to ensure that your practices and knowledge are always relevant and up to date to your specific area.
Synnovis is a pathology partnership between SYNLAB UK and Ireland, and the NHS, including sites, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to deliver and transform pathology services across South East London.
The partnership provides services to 1.7 million people living in South East London, as well as to hundreds of thousands of patients from outside the region who use local healthcare services.

Essential criteria
• BSc (Hons) IBMS accredited degree or equivalent
• HCPC State registration as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist
• Specialist portfolio in relevant discipline (if HCPC Registration via IBMS Portfolio route) or FIBMS or equivalent experience or Clinical Scientist
• MSc, FIBMS or equivalent experience in a similar role
• Quality Management qualification or equivalent experience
• Evidence of ongoing Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

• Acting as owner for escalation and communication to internal and external service users in the event of quality/ analyser/assay failures
• Performing audits, investigation of Adverse Incidents and Root Cause Analysis
• Experience of using QMS and managing Quality at service line level
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
• Demonstrate a high degree of skill, knowledge and judgement where interpretation of results can be highly subjective
• Full knowledge of ISO 15189 standard and ability to implement the correct policies and procedures in relation to quality systems, with reference to UKAS
• Knowledge of the CQC Framework
• Ability to manage the resolution of troubleshooting activity for highly technical and precision equipment and assays
• Ability to troubleshoot and train those who use the Quality Management Systems
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral, interpersonal and written forms to staff at all levels including clinicians and other laboratory employees
• Ability to manage effectively in a dynamic environment with multiple conflicting priorities
• Knowledge of effective line management techniques including all aspects of people management, for example recruitment and other HR matters
• Ability to maintain focus and concentration for extended periods of time
• Knowledge of the management of laboratory procedures in your own areas, including following health & safety legislation and the deliveries of Good Laboratory and Manufacturing Practice (GLP and GMP)
