Description
Crossness Sewage Treatment Works (STW) is one of Europe’s largest and most significant sewage treatment works, processing up to 600,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily. As a Lower Tier COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) site, it carries additional health and safety responsibilities, requiring stringent compliance with complex regulations. The site uniquely blends historic infrastructure—some of which dates back to the close of the American Civil War—with cutting-edge technology, including the OFWAT innovation scheme poised to revolutionize sludge processing across the UK. Looking to the future, we plan to invest over £200 million in Crossness STW over the next decade. Additionally, the site generates nearly 750 MWh of renewable energy each week from biogas and wind power, contributing significantly to sustainable operations. What you’ll be doing as a Sewage Treatment Works Site Operations Manager This is a fantastic career opportunity for an experienced and dynamic Site Manager to steer operations at Crossness STW. This is a senior role, responsible for overseeing a team of approximately 60 frontline operations staff, including eight Performance Managers. You will ensure the delivery of exceptional health and safety standards, process management, and performance management, all while steering the site through a period of significant investment and innovation. Key areas of focus would be: - Health & Safety Leadership: Be an advocate and steer the health and safety culture at Crossness STW, with a specific focus on meeting the demanding requirements of a Lower Tier COMAH site. Ensure that best practices are integrated into daily operations and compliance is consistently met. - Process Management: Oversee the operational performance of the treatment works, ensuring that plant availability and reliability meet the required regulatory standards. - Performance Management: Drive team performance through effective management, coaching, and development, while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. - Financial Management: Manage the site’s budget, identifying efficiencies and ensuring financial accountability. - Customer & Stakeholder Relations: Maintain high levels of service to our customers and engage proactively with internal and external stakeholders. - Supply Chain Collaboration: Work closely with the supply chain to deliver major asset maintenance and enhancement programs, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required standards. What you should bring to the role - Proven experience managing large, multi-layered operational teams, with strong management and communication skills. - A robust understanding of health and safety management, ideally with NEBOSH or equivalent qualification. - Experience in managing complex process plants is highly desirable. - Experience managing operational budgets and driving financial efficiencies. - Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
