About the Role
As part of a dedicated team of practitioners, you will provide students with advice and guidance on various aspects of student life. You will support students with budgeting and student finance, helping them navigate academic options within university regulations such as programme changes or study breaks. Additionally, you will provide information on student and graduate route visas and support students in making the most of their experience at MDX.
You will offer empathetic and pragmatic support to students facing barriers to success, struggling to engage with their studies, or needing advice following changes in personal or academic circumstances. You will guide students through available interventions and identify when specialist advice from mental health, wellbeing, disability, or academic support teams is needed.
Using data, you will identify students who may be struggling to engage and provide proactive, assertive support to maximize positive outcomes in continuation and attainment. You will work collaboratively across the university to resolve complex challenges, ensuring students are informed and empowered to make the right decisions for themselves.
Principal Duties:
- Provide empathetic support to students facing academic, financial, and personal challenges, guiding them through interventions and ensuring they feel safe and supported.
- Document interactions appropriately and ensure timely, clear, and engaging communication.
- Offer advice on budgeting, maximizing income, and accessing financial support including Student Finance England and hardship funding.
- Interpret and clarify university and programme regulations, advising on academic options such as course transfers, study breaks, and continuation.
- Use data to identify at-risk students and provide targeted support to improve engagement, performance, and retention.
- Coordinate with specialist support services and refer students to internal and external resources.
- Liaise with external organisations such as Student Finance England with student permission.
- Deliver advice on immigration matters including student and graduate route visas and visa extension processes.
- Promote the student advice service and contribute to strategies enhancing the student experience.
- Propose improvements to regulations, policies, and processes based on student interactions.
- Create and curate resources with students and stakeholders on relevant topics.
- Contribute to pan-university events including welcome, induction, and graduation.
- Undertake other activities as requested by the Education and Student Experience leadership.
Experience
Experience in student support, advice, or guidance roles is desirable. Ability to work empathetically with students facing complex academic, financial, or personal challenges is essential. Experience using data to identify and support at-risk students is advantageous.

You have a proactive approach to supporting students and are confident liaising with internal and external stakeholders. You are committed to enhancing the student experience and able to contribute to service development.
Qualifications
A relevant qualification in student support, advice, or a related field is desirable but not essential. A willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and training is expected.
