About the Role
The Conversational Shopping team at Amazon is seeking an AI Language Engineer to innovate and deliver scalable solutions that enhance the AI-assisted shopping experience. Join the high-performing organization behind Alexa for Shopping, focused on helping customers find and discover the best products through recommendations, comparisons, product Q&A, and more. This cross-functional role involves collaboration with global product, design, science, and engineering teams.

As an AI Language Engineer, you will apply expertise in Large Language Models (LLMs), coding, and natural language processing to solve complex problems in model evaluation, automation, and context engineering for agentic systems. You will contribute to an evaluation-driven product development strategy, working closely with Product Managers, Applied Scientists, Software Engineers, UX Researchers, and Editors.

Key responsibilities include authoring, optimizing, and managing system prompts for customer-facing AI shopping experiences on mobile and web apps, defining requirements for internal tooling through prototype development, and employing data processing and analysis skills to evaluate model performance and produce actionable insights. You will help raise quality standards through editorial workflow improvements, support onboarding and upskilling of Editors and AI Tutors, and collaborate across teams to deliver an optimal customer experience.

This role demands strong analytical and technical skills, experience in language technology, and the ability to create automated, scalable data workflows while maintaining high linguistic quality standards. Exceptional writing and communication skills are essential to interface effectively between technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Experience
- Experience with Unix tools
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities

- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments while meeting deadlines
- Experience with Large Language Models, NLP, or Machine Learning
- Proficiency with Python libraries for data analysis such as pandas and scikit-learn

Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing (NLP), or related field required
- Preferred: PhD in Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, NLP, or related technical field
- Preferred: Experience with SQL and Git
- Preferred: Experience building Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) or agentic systems
- Preferred: Experience conducting quantitative analysis and building data pipelines
- Preferred: Experience with AWS services such as Bedrock, S3, and EC2
- Preferred: Knowledge of user experience concepts and methods
- Preferred: Familiarity with online retail (e-commerce)
