About the Role
HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. We support service users and colleagues in accessing potentially life-changing justice. We are seeking committed individuals who want to make a difference by delivering justice and contributing to our ambitious Data Strategy to modernise and enhance data capabilities across the organisation.

This role is within the Strategy and Analysis Directorate, part of the Data job family, and will be recruited using the Government Digital and Data (GDD) Profession Capability Framework and Success Profiles Frameworks.

The HMCTS Data team supports senior leaders through reporting, analysis and insights, enabling strategic, data-driven business decisions. Following the publication of our Data Strategy in December 2021, we have invested in a cloud-based strategic data platform to transform how we work with data and add value to the organisation and the public.

As an Analytics Engineer, you will be part of the Analytics Engineering team responsible for holding, curating, and protecting data to drive organisational value now and in the future.

Your key responsibilities will include:
- Delivering physical data models and views to enable visualization of metrics and support data science projects
- Developing data models and transformation processes for new and existing data sources
- Collaborating with subject matter experts to implement business rules and definitions underpinning measures, metrics and KPIs
- Working closely with operational colleagues, project teams and stakeholders to gather and deliver business requirements
- Embedding improved data working practices including automation and data assurance

Requirements

Experience
- Some experience of ETL (extract, transform and load) and data integration, including exporting data from source systems, transforming data according to business rules and data models, and loading data into storage platforms
- Experience working with data and databases, ideally in a Data Warehouse environment
- Understanding of Data Warehouse techniques such as dimensional data modelling and relational database design (e.g. Kimball) or willingness to learn
- SQL skills and experience working with databases
- Desirable: experience with parameterised coding in scripting/programming languages such as Python or Spark
- Desirable: experience using cloud-based data services such as Azure Data Factory, Synapse or Fabric

About you
Enthusiastic and motivated with a commitment to public service and delivering justice. Able to collaborate effectively across teams and stakeholders. Willingness to learn and develop new skills in data engineering and analytics.

Qualifications
No specific qualifications are mandated, but relevant experience and training in data engineering, programming, or related fields will be advantageous. Access to continuous development opportunities including Microsoft Azure training, online courses, webinars, coaching and peer support will be provided.
