About the Role
The Alexa International Tech (AIT) team is seeking a passionate, talented, and inventive Applied Scientist with a strong deep learning background to build industry-leading Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technology using Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal systems. You will work on cutting-edge technology that powers Alexa for hundreds of millions of customers worldwide, pushing the boundaries of generative AI to make Alexa sound more natural, expressive, and culturally relevant across multiple languages and locales. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine fundamental research with large-scale production impact at the intersection of speech synthesis, large language models, and multimodal AI systems.
As part of the Alexa International Tech team within Alexa AI, you will develop novel algorithms and modeling techniques to advance multi-modal models focused on speech generation. Leveraging Amazon's diverse data sources and large-scale computing resources, you will build machine learning models that deliver natural, expressive, and culturally appropriate speech experiences across multiple languages. Your responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, prototyping new approaches, iterating rapidly to validate hypotheses, publishing findings at top-tier conferences, and contributing to Amazon's intellectual property portfolio.
You will collaborate closely with engineering teams to transition research prototypes into production systems serving customers at scale. This role requires a pragmatic technical leader comfortable with ambiguity, capable of clearly summarizing complex data and models through visual and written explanations. You will mentor junior scientists, influence technical direction, and communicate results effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
A typical day involves reviewing experiment results, iterating on model architectures for speech generation, collaborating with software engineers to optimize models for production, and partnering with product managers to align research priorities with customer needs. You will participate in science reviews, paper reading groups, and brainstorming sessions with fellow scientists. Your work will directly impact how Alexa sounds and communicates with customers in international markets, providing meaningful challenges at a global scale.
About the Team
The Alexa International Tech team is a global group with engineering teams across all three regions. Our vision is to build an Alexa assistant that is culturally relevant, linguistically fluent, and locally present. Operating with a startup mentality within Amazon, we move fast to deliver breakthrough experiences while maintaining the highest scientific rigor.
