Evelina London Children’s Hospital, part of the Trust, delivers specialist paediatric services including cardiac, renal, and critical care across south east England.
The Assistant Service Manager will support the Service Manager in operationally managing the Paediatric Neurosciences department, delivering a range of services including medical secretarial support to patients, consultants, and clinical teams. This role involves leadership and expert advice to administrative teams to ensure high standards of care and continuous service improvement. The post may also include management of outpatient departments, overseeing day-to-day services in line with objectives, targets, quality standards, and resource constraints.
The role requires close collaboration with service leads, clinicians, managers, and administrative staff to support change and service development. The Assistant Service Manager will coordinate best practices and ensure consistency in administrative and medical secretary procedures. Key responsibilities include line management and training of junior staff, overseeing performance and clinic scheduling, managing leave and capacity, responding to patient concerns, data quality monitoring, and participation in service improvement initiatives.
The Children’s Neurosciences department provides comprehensive tertiary services including Neurology, Rehabilitation, and Neurodisability for children from South East Thames and beyond, serving a population of over 9 million. The department works closely with Neurosurgical colleagues at Kings College Hospital within the Kings Health Partners network.
Experience
- Significant experience in staff supervision and management including recruitment, retention, appraisal, and first-line disciplinary actions
- Experience in budget management
- Proven track record in meeting operational objectives
- Experience delivering Administrative and Clerical Outpatient Services
- Experience managing effective service delivery, including introducing and supporting change processes
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clinicians and multidisciplinary teams
- Experience influencing organisational culture positively
- Experience supporting innovation and service improvements
- Desirable: Experience contributing to strategic objectives, delivering services across multiple sites, familiarity with NHS clinical and information systems such as EPIC

- Ability to follow complex protocols and provide appropriate feedback to senior staff
- Desirable: Financial management and analysis skills, knowledge of medical terminology, understanding of peer review and governance processes
Qualifications
- Essential: GCSE Maths & English
- Track record of continuous professional and management development
- Educated to HNC/Equivalent Diploma or equivalent experience
- Desirable: IT qualification/training such as European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
