About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to take a leadership role at the heart of a policy area undergoing significant scrutiny and change. Based in Westminster, you will join the Independent Offices, the Civil Service Commission, and the Commissioner for Public Appointments—arms-length bodies united by the goal of maintaining public confidence in government integrity.

The Business Appointment Rules (BARs) team provides independent advice and scrutiny on the application of BARs for senior civil servants, special advisers, and diplomats. This high-profile work attracts considerable attention from media, academics, and parliamentarians, placing you at the centre of a critical system.

As Casework Lead, reporting to the Grade 7 Team Leader, you will oversee the day-to-day production of casework, ensuring quality, accuracy, and timeliness. You will provide empowering line management to two Higher Executive Officers (HEOs) within a friendly, agile team focused on impactful work and staff wellbeing.

This role offers the chance to lead a significant review implementing the Commission’s strategic overhaul of the BARs, manage senior stakeholder engagement across government, and contribute to pioneering AI-native approaches to casework. You will develop operational excellence in casework delivery and play a broader leadership role within the Civil Service Commission and Independent Offices.

Experience
Proven ability to think critically and analytically, making judgements based on evidence within a framework of rules and guidance.
Experience in leading and coaching teams, with the capability to build, develop, and lead an inclusive, high-performing team.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities effectively, delivering work to tight deadlines while maintaining stakeholder communication.
Strong communication skills, able to convey complex information clearly and persuasively to senior government officials and external audiences.

About you
Motivated and capable leader with a commitment to staff wellbeing and career development.
Comfortable working in a fast-changing, high-profile environment with senior stakeholders.
Innovative thinker eager to contribute to AI-driven improvements in casework.
Committed to fostering a positive team culture and supporting Civil Service Commissioners in their decision-making.

Qualifications
No specific qualifications are mandated; however, relevant experience in casework management, policy application, or public administration is highly desirable.
