Location
Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London, WC2A 2LL. The role is London based and requires living within a reasonable daily commute of London. Circuit work involves travel within England and Wales with overnight stays during the week in judicial accommodation.

Hours
Full Time - 37 hours per week. Working patterns are agreed with the judge and line manager. There is an expectation to work longer hours if required. This role is not suitable for part-time, job sharing, or frequent home working.

Salary
£33,551 per annum

About the Role
The Clerk to HM Judges provides first line support to a Lord or Lady Justice of Appeal or High Court Judge, ensuring best use of the judge's time to enable focus on delivering justice. Responsibilities include managing the judge’s diary, typing documents such as judgments and orders, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders including legal representatives, members of the public, and other judiciary members. The role involves administrative duties, domestic tasks as required by the judge, and transporting court bundles and judicial materials both in London and on circuit. Circuit work occurs on average three times per legal year for periods of 2-6 weeks or more, requiring overnight stays in judicial accommodation. Clerks continue managing the judge’s commitments while on circuit and liaise with housekeepers and lodgings managers regarding domestic arrangements. This is a unique and rewarding role within the justice system, offering full training and requiring organisational skills, adaptability, confidentiality, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy.

Requirements

Experience
Previous experience using Microsoft Office applications is required. Accurate typing skills with a minimum speed of 35 words per minute are essential and will be tested during the assessment day. Experience in managing complex diaries and administrative duties is advantageous.

About you
You must have excellent organisational skills, be adaptable, and able to work independently using your own initiative. Strong communication skills are essential to liaise effectively with judges, legal professionals, court users, and the public. You must demonstrate confidentiality, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy. A high standard of spoken and written English is required, including the ability to assimilate information from various sources and summarise it clearly and concisely. The role requires flexibility to work longer hours when necessary and willingness to travel for circuit work. A full driving licence is desirable but not essential.

Qualifications
No formal qualifications are specified; however, candidates must demonstrate the essential skills and behaviours required for the role, including proficiency in IT and typing, and meet the security and residency requirements for vetting.
