About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic and motivated registrars in Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, Virology, Public Health or Paediatrics to join UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) as a Clinical Fellow. This fellowship offers outstanding experience and expertise at a national level in areas including investigation and management of major incidents and outbreaks; infectious disease surveillance; guidance and policy development and implementation; research; and service development and improvement. The role involves close collaborative work across regional reference laboratories, directorates, and divisions.
An individual development plan will be agreed with the Fellow based on prior experience and interests, outlining duties and objectives tailored to both the Directorate/Division needs and the individual. The plan includes objective setting, expected outputs, and project timelines.
This 12-month fellowship within the Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) division is designed for registrars currently on training programmes with a National Training Number (NTN) and requires Out of Programme Experience/Training (OOPE/OOPT) approval from their Training Programme Director (TPD).
The Clinical Fellow will be embedded within the Incidents, Outbreaks and Infection Guidance (IOIG) team and gain experience in antimicrobial resistance and stewardship; infection prevention and control; and collaborative work with the Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infections Reference Unit (AMRHAI). Previous fellows have contributed to national incident work on pathogens such as Burkholderia cepacia complex, Group A Streptococcus, Candida auris, Clostridioides difficile, Mycobacterium chelonae, and the National Action Plan for AMR.
The role includes dealing with enquiries from across UKHSA and government, issuing clinical and public health advice on incidents, participating in outbreak investigations, attending and presenting at key meetings, and contributing to strategic projects aligned with the division’s objectives.
UKHSA offers a supportive environment with tailored learning and development, flexible working options, and a culture that encourages inclusion and diversity.
