About the Role
We are seeking a Communications Specialist to join the Communications Function within the Communications & Engagement group at the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This fixed-term contract role, available until December 2027, will be based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire.
The MHRA enhances and improves the health of millions every day through effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, supported by science and research. The agency comprises approximately 1600 staff working across two main centres and various locations across the UK and abroad.
The Communications and Engagement Function is a multi-award-winning team focused on supporting the agency’s business outcomes by putting patients and the public at the centre of all work. The Communications team, where this role sits, works alongside News and Media, Patient and Public Stakeholder Engagement, and Customer Experience teams.
The role involves leading the development and implementation of communications strategies to support the ASPIRe project, which upgrades core infrastructure across the agency’s estate. You will formulate strategic communications plans and deliver them through media, digital, and direct marketing channels, providing leadership to matrix communications teams and external suppliers.
Key responsibilities include developing and nurturing stakeholder relationships, ensuring alignment with MHRA’s brand and strategic priorities, integrating stakeholder insight into wider communications activities, and acting as a lead communications specialist to deliver clear, compelling messaging to internal and external audiences. You will also provide expert advice to senior leaders, manage communications projects, and proactively identify communications opportunities to support the programme’s objectives.
Experience
- Proven track record of developing communications and engagement strategies and delivering complex projects, programmes, and campaigns using diverse communications tools and techniques.
- Excellent experience in stakeholder engagement and mapping to communicate key messages effectively.
- Ability to maintain multiple projects/programmes while proactively managing risks and identifying solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and at pace within complex business and political environments.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence and challenge at all levels.
About you
You will be an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills, able to provide high-quality strategic counsel to senior leaders. You will be proactive in building and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders and comfortable leading communications projects and programmes. A positive customer service approach and an understanding of diverse customer needs are essential.
Qualifications
A relevant qualification is desirable, along with membership of a professional body such as CIM or CIPR. Knowledge and understanding of the health or regulatory landscape is advantageous.
