
Location
Hybrid working based at UK Health Security Agency core HQ in Canary Wharf, London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Hybrid model requires a minimum of 60% of contractual hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata) spent in the office. The HQ offers modern, newly refurbished offices with excellent city centre transport links and co-location with other government departments.

About the Role
As a Content Designer, you will work as part of the GOV.UK team collaborating with teams across UKHSA to make content easier for people to understand and use. You will develop and publish content, working closely with subject matter experts including scientists and senior policy leads. Your responsibilities include commissioning, writing, editing, and publishing content using the Whitehall Publisher content management system, adhering to style guides and securing necessary approvals.
During public health incidents, you will work at pace while maintaining content standards in an intensive publishing environment. You will lead complex content design projects end-to-end, managing quality and delivery timelines, training new team members and devolved editors, managing developments on the Jira Service Desk platform, and overseeing user-research projects.
You will be an expert lead on scientific and health communication, promoting plain English and statutory accessibility guidance. You will coach colleagues and advise external stakeholders, maintain and improve editorial standards, and embed a digital culture focused on user needs and the Digital by Default Service Standard.
Additional responsibilities include developing content for UKHSA’s digital channels such as GOV.UK, reviewing and shaping content to meet user needs, managing stakeholder relationships, monitoring content performance, managing complex editorial and digital projects, and implementing publishing policies.
The role requires maintaining effective relations with senior managers and external stakeholders, upholding the UKHSA editorial house style in line with the GDS Style Guide, and using workflow management systems, particularly Jira.
Successful candidates must pass a Basic Personnel Security Standard check prior to appointment.
Experience
- Proven experience of writing for the web, creating accessible and usable content that meets organisational objectives
- Experience with user-centred content design methods, best practices, and appropriate tooling
- Knowledge of Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and how to ensure content compliance
- Experience writing and editing accessible content using style guides and design standards, applying feedback, research, and analytics to make strategic content decisions
- Experience using content management systems and basic image editing
- Experience using metrics and user feedback to define and refine content
- Experience managing stakeholder relationships and influencing others to support user-centred standards and ways of working

- Working knowledge of prototyping tools (e.g., Figma) is desirable
