In addition to your primary court location, you may be required to cover other Crown Courts across London within a reasonable commuting distance.
Hours
Full Time - 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. HMCTS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns where they meet the demands of the role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment.
Salary
£33,551 per annum plus £9,719 employer contribution towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
About the Role
As a Crown Court Clerk, you will play a vital role in ensuring Crown Court hearings run smoothly. You will confidently communicate in court, liaise with Judges and all participants, and produce accurate and timely court documents. This role includes line management responsibilities and requires high emotional resilience, sensitivity, and a non-judgemental approach to service users.
You will be an active listener and confident public speaker, able to manage complex and sensitive matters calmly and professionally. Working closely with the clerking team, you will ensure the smooth running of daily court sittings, intervene when necessary, and maximise judicial sitting time.
Your duties will include taking verdicts, conducting arraignments, producing court orders, and recording hearing outcomes accurately and efficiently. You will also lead and support your team’s wellbeing and performance through clear direction and regular meetings.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to multi-task are essential, as is adaptability to new IT systems and digital solutions. Court dress includes a collar and tabs with a jacket or gown, with a wig required when clerking for a High Court Judge or at the Central Criminal Court.

Experience
Experience of speaking publicly and working confidently within a courtroom environment is essential. Proven ability to produce exact and time-critical documentation is required.

Qualifications
Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK and meet the nationality requirements. Enhanced vetting checks (Counter Terrorist Check Level Clearance) are required for certain locations.
There are no formal qualification requirements specified, but strong organisational, communication, leadership, and IT skills are necessary.
