About the Role
This national role is within the Security and Information Directorate (SID), part of the Ministry of Justice's Service Transformation Group. SID leads the strategic vision for modernising and digitising legacy systems across the MoJ and its agencies, ensuring secure, lawful, and transparent information management.
The Data Protection Manager will report to the Data Protection Strategic Lead and play a key role in improving how the department manages personal data. You will promote adherence to data protection legislation, provide expert guidance across diverse business areas, and manage high-impact personal data incidents.
Key responsibilities include acting as the principal contact for several MoJ agencies and workstreams, advising on complex data protection compliance matters, reviewing Data Protection Impact Assessments and data sharing agreements, and building strong working relationships across government departments. The role also involves drafting clear legal advice, submissions, and correspondence for senior officials, Ministers, stakeholders, and the public.
This position offers the opportunity to influence information governance at a senior level within a large government department, contributing to the secure and effective handling of personal data.
Experience
- Current working knowledge and understanding of GDPR and DPA 2018, with the ability to advise on their impact on technology systems and projects.
- Proven track record in developing and leading information assurance strategy within government, including stakeholder engagement and risk management.
- Leadership experience in information or data management settings.
- Knowledge of government working practices including technical security advice, risk management, data protection impact assessments, governance, and compliance.
- Experience managing teams of information security or assurance specialists.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining team focus and alignment.
- Experience engaging with stakeholders and staff to resolve business issues and ensure efficient service delivery.
- Skilled in providing evidence-based, risk-balanced advice to senior leaders, presenting complex issues clearly and non-technically.

Qualifications
- A data protection or GDPR qualification such as CIPP/E or CIPM is desirable but not essential.
