About the Role
The Export Control and Sanctions Directorate (EC&S) supports UK businesses and organisations to export securely while advancing national security objectives. This role is within the Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU), which rigorously assesses export licence applications, ensuring compliance with National Security, International Humanitarian Law, and Counter-Proliferation standards. You will work closely with the Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation (OTSI), enforcing trade sanctions and supporting businesses in compliance.
You will serve as one of three Deputies to the Head of Licensing Unit, line managing Licensing Managers who oversee Licensing Officers. Your leadership will focus on coaching, developing teams, and driving continuous improvement in quality and efficiency. You will also lead the introduction of Quality Assurance processes, engage with exporters to resolve licensing barriers, and collaborate with other government departments to meet performance targets.
This role requires managing sensitive and complex cases with care, fostering an inclusive team culture, and supporting new initiatives to embed continuous improvement. You will draft submissions, provide analytical assessments, and build specialist knowledge in casework areas.
Experience
- Knowledge of and experience working in export controls
- Previous line management experience in an operational delivery team
- Proven ability to identify and lead change initiatives in an operational environment
- Strong networking and communication skills with internal and external stakeholders
- Resilience and ownership in managing challenging situations under pressure
- Excellent prioritisation skills to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
