About the Role
Spotlight Sports Group is a global media and technology company dedicated to setting the standard for trusted, customer-driven experiences across global racing and sports betting. As Deputy News Editor at Racing Post, you will act as deputy to the news editor within the Content (racing) team, helping to create a digital-first, audience-led news service across digital, print and social media platforms. This key role requires a passion for innovative news formats and a sharp eye for exclusives. You will assist in running the news-gathering operation, managing a team of reporters, and commissioning agenda-setting news stories. Your responsibilities include regularly acting as duty news editor, fostering a creative environment for reporters, evolving the digital-first news strategy with formats such as live blogs, explainers, timelines, Q&As, data-led journalism and video, and working closely with audience, social, video and graphics teams to maximise reach and impact. You will use audience data and editorial judgement to assess performance and improve commissioning, ensure major breaking stories are covered promptly with in-depth follow-up, line manage reporters to raise standards, represent the news desk at editorial conferences, and support planning of news coverage and special projects.

Requirements

Experience
Proven experience commissioning and editing news in a fast-paced digital newsroom environment. Experience managing, coaching or developing journalists is desirable.

About you
Excellent news judgement with confidence to make rapid editorial decisions under pressure. Strong understanding of digital publishing, audience behaviour and formats that drive reach, engagement and subscriptions. Ability to provide clear, constructive feedback and raise standards across a reporting team. Confidence using audience data and analytics to inform commissioning and coverage decisions. Excellent time management skills with ability to meet deadlines. Strong communication skills at all levels with colleagues, contributors, contacts and stakeholders. Solid knowledge of media law, editorial compliance and journalistic ethics. Strong interest in horseracing with at least a working knowledge of the sport and betting industry.
