About the Role
Join St Helens Metropolitan Council and make a real difference as an Early Help Worker within the Early Help Service. Located in the heart of the Northwest close to Liverpool, Manchester, and Lancashire, St Helens is a transformational Council passionate and ambitious for the communities it supports. Working within Children’s Services means joining a supportive, committed, and ambitious team focused on improving the lives of children and families. You will benefit from a competitive salary, flexible working arrangements, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

As an Early Help Worker, you will play a crucial frontline role supporting children, young people, and families at the earliest opportunity. Acting as the Lead Professional, you will support families who need help at Level 2 on the St Helens Descriptors of Need. You will work with children from pre-birth to 18 years, delivering support both in their homes and in the community.

You will assist families facing challenges such as domestic abuse, mental health difficulties, substance misuse, behaviour and parenting challenges, neglect, relationship or family breakdown, and poverty or stress-related difficulties. Your focus will be on empowering families—helping them understand what is going well, what needs to change, and how to build on their strengths to achieve positive, lasting outcomes.

This role is fixed-term until September 2029 or sooner should the post holder return. You will work collaboratively with schools, health services, community organisations, and other professionals to deliver coordinated support that helps children stay safe, healthy, and able to achieve their full potential.

Key responsibilities include carrying out holistic, family-centred assessments, developing and reviewing tailored support plans, acting as Lead Professional coordinating multi-agency support, delivering evidence-based interventions, building meaningful relationships through regular home and community visits, maintaining high-quality case recordings, managing risk and safeguarding concerns, and participating in reflective supervision and ongoing training.

Requirements

Experience
Experience working directly with children, young people, and families. Experience completing assessments and creating support plans. Strong understanding of safeguarding and child development.

About you
Passionate about making a difference. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. Confidence working independently and as part of a team. Commitment to inclusive and anti-discriminatory practice. Ability to build strong professional relationships and work collaboratively with multi-agency partners.

Qualifications
A professional qualification in statutory or community services is required. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle (or an alternative plan if unable to drive due to disability) is essential.
