About the Role
Do you want an actuarial career with a difference, where you can have a real impact working with government departments and the wider public sector? At the Government Actuary's Department (GAD), our mission is to support effective decision-making and robust reporting within the public sector as the first-choice provider of actuarial and specialist analysis, advice, and assurance. Our work covers valuation and policy support related to insurance-type indemnities and contingent liabilities, pension schemes, financial risk, and social security. We also provide financial modelling and quality assurance.
As a General Insurance Actuary, you will be a key consultant advising our general insurance clients, supporting the delivery of actuarial advice to help make more effective and informed decisions. The role offers significantly more variety than a traditional general insurance actuary position due to the public sector context. This includes supporting clients holistically by feeding reserving insights into pricing and cashflow considerations, producing financial statements, providing wider policy support, and adapting to changes in client priorities, including situations with limited data or novel risks where government acts as insurer of last resort.
The role will likely be based in our Insurance Provisioning team, working closely with public sector risk-pooling arrangements such as NHS Resolution and the Risk Protection Arrangement for schools. You will initially focus on an individual client but will be expected to support other teams and undertake a wider variety of work as required.
You will lead on aspects of core annual projects including year-end provisioning estimates, supporting client accounts and auditors, cashflow projections, and contribution setting. Additional projects may involve quantifying emerging trends, feeding insights into policy development, supporting client analysis and model development, and implementing process improvements.
You will build and maintain client relationships, identify opportunities for additional support, and ensure consistency of approach. Over time, you will work with multiple clients, contributing to projects that serve the best interests of the taxpayer and adapt to new challenges.
We offer great working benefits including a world-class pension, flexible working options, and a career where your learning and development are taken seriously.
Experience
Supporting client engagement on general insurance-related actuarial advice to public sector risk-pooling arrangements, including reserving, pricing, and wider policy advice. Experience managing and overseeing project delivery for smaller projects and supporting larger projects through effective project management, specifying work, monitoring output, and providing feedback. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients, including business development and client engagement activities.
About you
You provide a consistently high level of service, delivering work within professional requirements. You adapt to changing client needs and balance conflicting priorities while complying with professional actuarial and GAD guidance. You are committed to developing your own skills and those of junior colleagues to meet the evolving nature of GAD’s work. You work effectively and flexibly across teams to meet client demand and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant actuarial matters, including meeting all CPD requirements.
Qualifications
Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) or equivalent actuarial professional body (essential). Knowledge of UK general insurance actuarial concepts and techniques (essential).
