About the Role
General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, providing essential support by carrying out administrative tasks combined in some areas with basic clinical duties. This role helps to free up GPs' time and contributes to the smooth running of appointments, improving patient experience within the surgery.
- Improve patient access and release highly qualified staff to focus on treating and managing patients with more complex conditions
- Enhance patient flow during surgery hours, increasing appointment efficiency and reducing waiting times
- Support patient experience by reiterating or clarifying information from the GP
- Positively impact staff retention and job satisfaction
- Reduce GP time spent managing correspondence

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Check and monitor incoming NHS emails, responding to patients as appropriate
- Sort clinical post and prioritise actions for the GP, signposting to relevant staff such as clinical pharmacists
- Extract and code information from clinical letters, updating patient notes
- Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments
- Prepare patients for GP consultations by taking brief histories and basic clinical readings
- Perform basic clinical tasks including urine dips, blood pressure measurement, ECGs, and phlebotomy
- Complete basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of forms for GP approval, such as insurance, mortgage, and benefits agency forms
- Explain treatment procedures to patients
- Assist GPs in liaising with external agencies, for example arranging on-call doctor advice or admissions
- Support GPs with immunisations and wound care

Requirements

Experience
- Prior experience in a receptionist or administrative role within a GP surgery
- Experience working with the general public
- Experience of administrative duties in a healthcare setting

Qualifications
- GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths or equivalent
