About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to work within the UK Parliament as a Hansard Publisher. You will be part of the Procedural Publishing Unit, providing publishing services across Parliament with a focus on supporting both the Commons and the Lords. The role involves formatting, checking, and nightly publication of Hansard documents, which are published to a no-fail deadline shortly after the House of Commons and House of Lords rise. A shift allowance reflects that work often continues into the early hours of the following day.

You will receive documents in XML format from Hansard Reporters and Editors and use a bespoke Content Management System to output these files to PDF for overnight printing and to HTML for immediate publication on Parliament’s web pages, including the Hansard website and the ‘House Papers’ app. Full training in this system will be provided.

In the longer term, there may be opportunities to train in producing other business papers managed by the Procedural Publishing Unit, such as the Order Paper and legislative material, using various publishing tools.

This role is initially offered on an 18-month contract with a view to extension.

Requirements

Experience
Familiarity with House business publications, including Hansard, and a strong desire and ability to understand these in depth, particularly the processes for developing and finalising copy.
High proficiency in publishing and content manipulation software, especially related to structured data formats such as XML and database-driven publishing, as well as standard design packages like Adobe Creative Suite.
Confident and effective communication skills in time-sensitive situations, particularly regarding copy flow and information layout.
Excellent attention to detail combined with the ability to work quickly and accurately to meet no-fail publication deadlines.
Knowledge of and enthusiasm for digital publishing formats.

About you
You are detail-oriented, able to work efficiently under pressure, and have a strong commitment to accuracy and quality. You are adaptable and willing to learn new publishing tools and processes. You thrive in a collaborative team environment and can communicate clearly and effectively.

Qualifications
Relevant experience or qualifications in publishing, digital content management, or related fields would be advantageous but are not explicitly required. A willingness to learn and develop skills within the Parliamentary publishing environment is essential.
