About the Role
Too much good science stalls before it reaches patients, often due to lack of coordination, funding gaps at proof-of-concept stage, and a system where researchers, the NHS, industry and investors work in parallel rather than together. The Academy of Medical Sciences is building a new Research Translation and Enterprise function to change this, turning discovery into companies and products that reach patients. This role sits within the enterprise side of that work.
Reporting to the Head of Enterprise, you will lead a defined area of industry partnership activity, helping the best science from the Fellowship unlock investment to scale and reach the market, and developing the enterprise offer that supports it. You will turn the Academy’s convening power into practical commercial partnerships that accelerate translation.
Your responsibilities include leading partnership programmes, managing delivery, risks and resources, and collaborating closely with colleagues across Grants and Programmes, Policy, Communications and Engagement, Operations, and the Fellowship. You will work autonomously within agreed governance frameworks to organise and deliver a portfolio of partnership activities aligned with the Academy’s charitable purpose and wider organisational priorities.
You will bridge science, industry and delivery by working with Fellows, researchers and industry partners to identify opportunities where partnership activity can help promising science progress towards patient benefit. Using evidence, sector knowledge and stakeholder insight, you will shape partnership propositions, test feasibility and develop appropriate routes for delivery.
Developing commercial and collaborative pathways is a key part of the role. You will build credible relationships with industry, venture and translational partners, understanding their priorities while protecting the Academy’s independence and charitable purpose. You will develop and support practical mechanisms for collaboration such as workshops, demonstration opportunities and partnership propositions, analysing complex opportunities and making clear recommendations.
Building partnerships and funding is essential. You will develop and manage partnerships that bring external capability, insight and funding from industry, public funders, research charities and venture partners. You will secure commitments and shared ownership while ensuring agreements are realistic, deliverable and proportionate. Clear reporting on progress, performance, resources and risk to the Head of Enterprise is expected, alongside collaboration with peers and Heads across the Academy to support wider organisational priorities and cross-Academy activity.
