About the Role
HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is seeking three Lead Interaction Designers to lead the profession across multiple complex services within jurisdictional areas. This role involves setting direction and supporting designers to champion user-centred design across criminal, civil and family courts, tribunals, and cross-cutting services such as scheduling and listing.

You will define and set standards to assure best practice in user-centred design and develop HMCTS' design maturity by influencing, leading, and mentoring others alongside other design leads. Working closely with the profession lead, you will foster a culture of learning and experimentation by creating an inclusive, productive environment for designers.

As a strategic advocate for citizen, professional, and judicial users, you will use evidence-led approaches to champion their needs both on- and off-line, influencing decision-making at senior levels. Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with other design leads to set an ambitious vision for user-centred design at HMCTS, pushing the boundaries of design in government.
- Defining, developing, and embedding design standards to ensure all design work is inclusive, accessible, and user-friendly.
- Working with service owners, profession leads, and the Head of UCD to set and communicate strategy, supporting teams to deliver.
- Collaborating with other profession leads (user research, product, software development) to champion digital transformation and improve capability.
- Supporting recruitment and professional development of a talented and diverse design team through coaching, line management, and career progression.
- Championing Communities of Practice to inspire learning, sharing best practices, and collaboration on strategic challenges.
- Acting as a leader in the cross-government design community by sharing work, learnings, and developing best practices.

Experience
- Proven ability to grow talent and develop design culture by creating a collaborative and inclusive environment.
- Experience coaching and mentoring designers and coordinating communities of practice.
- Strong grounding in user-centred design with experience across multiple or highly complex services.
- Ability to provide direction on appropriate tools and methods, support agile multi-disciplinary teams, and advocate for user-centred design.
- Experience creating high-quality, compelling design concepts, including rapid prototyping.
- Experience advocating for end-to-end user-centred design at a strategic level across teams, departments, and organisations.
- Ability to interpret senior leaders’ and stakeholders’ needs, using design thinking to solve complex organisational challenges and influence strategy.

About you
- Knowledge of what good public services look like and how to design in an inclusive, accessible way.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence and inspire others.
- Collaborative mindset with excellent communication and influencing skills.
- Commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion, and a positive working culture.

Qualifications
- While specific qualifications are not detailed, alignment with the Government Digital and Data (GDD) Profession Capability Framework and Success Profiles Frameworks is expected.
