About the Role
The Government Digital Service (GDS) is the digital centre of government, responsible for setting, leading and delivering the vision for a modern digital government. Our priorities include joining up public sector services, harnessing AI for public good, strengthening digital and data infrastructure, elevating leadership, funding for outcomes, and committing to transparency and accountability.
As a Mid or Senior Site Reliability Engineer within the newly formed Platform Engineering, Resilience and Cyber directorate, you will be part of the Engineering Enablement programme focused on boosting efficiency, strengthening security, and improving developer experience by providing infrastructure, tools and standards.
There are three roles available: two (one Senior, one Mid) in the Engineering Access team working on rolling out a Privileged Access Management system based on Microsoft Entra across all GDS production services, and one Senior role in the Cloud Platform team responsible for the AWS estate and taking operational responsibility for the Azure Landing zone.
In this role, you will:
- Be part of a multidisciplinary team implementing and supporting Azure cloud platform or Entra ID identity and access management system
- Write infrastructure as code using Terraform to ensure infrastructure consistency, reusability and reliability
- Deploy and configure observability tools to quickly identify and respond to operational issues
- Build CI/CD pipelines to enable rapid and reliable code deployment
- Provide day-to-day platform and tool support to ensure availability, security and robustness
- Participate in on-call rotations as necessary
- Solve complex problems and share knowledge to foster a culture of openness and learning
In addition, Senior Site Reliability Engineers will:
- Line manage 1-2 technologists, supporting their growth and development
- Provide technical leadership within the team, guiding best approaches and solutions

Experience
- Strong experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services, architecture and best practices
- Expertise designing and implementing identity and access management systems using Entra ID, including Conditional Access, PIM and SCIM
- Platform Engineering mindset with proficiency in designing scalable, resilient, and secure cloud platforms
- Preference for infrastructure-as-code and automation using Terraform
- Experience with container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes, AKS or serverless application design
- Experience supporting large production services
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (Ruby, Typescript, Python preferred)
- Strong understanding of version control using Git
- Experience creating pipelines in CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions or AWS CodePipeline
- Strong understanding of security principles for large operational services
Additional requirements for Senior Site Reliability Engineers:
- Experience in technical leadership, such as acting as a tech lead or leading technical initiatives
- Experience in line management, mentoring or coaching

Qualifications
No specific formal qualifications are required; however, demonstrable experience and skills in the areas outlined above are essential. A security clearance (SC) is required, which normally involves 5 years UK residency, though exceptions may apply with supplementary checks.
