Hours
9-day fortnight working pattern with regular weekend working.

Salary
Starting from £47,731, with a package commensurate with skills, experience and responsibilities.

About the Role
Join the Guardian and be part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation delivering fearless, investigative journalism that holds power to account. As a Motion Graphics Designer focused on sport, you will design motion graphics and animations that explain complex stories and engage audiences across a wide range of sport journalism topics. Recent projects have included videos on historic rivalries, football governance, and societal impacts of major sporting events. Working closely with journalists, producers and designers, you will use visual journalism to make complex reporting accessible, compelling and memorable for millions of readers.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract or internal staff secondment. You will primarily work with the Guardian's sport social video team to create bespoke, audience-focused motion graphics and explanatory animations for digital journalism. Responsibilities include designing graphics templates for video producers, maintaining brand graphics and template assets, and collaborating closely with the design department to uphold Guardian style and visual reporting standards. You will liaise with video producers, multimedia editors, sport editors, journalists, social video producers, art directors, designers, developers and other specialists across the organisation.

The role offers a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a strong focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

Requirements

Experience
Demonstrable professional experience creating high-quality motion graphics and animation that translate ideas into engaging, dynamic visual storytelling with strong typography, colour, composition and brand awareness. Experience visualising data and explanatory design, using animation to simplify complex topics. Proven ability to develop new video formats, styles and guidelines such as explainers, news videos and documentaries. Experience working collaboratively with video producers, designers and editors. Comfortable with all practical aspects of video production including concept, design, animation, post-production, and incorporating sound and music. Experience working in a newsroom is an advantage.

About you
Interest in or knowledge of sport is desirable. Ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role is valued. You should be enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and committed to maintaining high standards of design and storytelling. We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in UK media.

Qualifications
No specific qualifications are mandated, but a strong portfolio demonstrating relevant skills and experience is essential. Commitment to ongoing personal and professional development is expected.
