About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Area Regeneration Team at Camden Council, working at the forefront of delivering the We Make Camden Vision and Objectives. The Neighbourhood Spaces Transformation Lead will support the physical transformation of underused Council assets and develop strategies for their environmentally sustainable and financially viable operation. This role is underpinned by codesign, community collaboration, and stewardship.
The current programme includes transforming several vacant buildings, most notably converting a vacant cinema in Kentish Town into a vibrant mix of workspace and community space. This space will foster connections between organisations and residents through mission-focused change and community-led stewardship, creating opportunities for local decision-making and neighbourhood-level change. Capital works are anticipated to commence later this year, supported by secured grant funding. Meanwhile, the building is being used as a “Civic Action Lab” featuring community-led programming and artist studios.
Further proposals for a neighbourhood space in Kilburn are in development, in close partnership with One Kilburn. The postholder will also lead the Vacant Spaces on Estates pilot programme, aligned with Camden’s We Make Camden Estates Mission to create healthy, sustainable estates that unlock creativity by 2030. Two pilot projects are underway, with a prospectus of nine additional potential sites being explored.
The role involves leading projects from inception and vision through design, construction, and end use. The Neighbourhood Spaces Transformation Lead will manage programme delivery, reporting, governance, and financial planning, including capital investment and ongoing operational viability.
This position is part of the Area Regeneration Management Team and includes line management responsibilities for regeneration officers (1-3 direct reports) and project management of wider teams.
Experience
Proven experience in regeneration, combining technical knowledge of building transformation with a strong focus on generating social value. Experience managing the full lifecycle of physical asset transformation, including procuring and managing consultants, design teams, and contractors. Skilled in programme management, reporting, governance, and financial planning for capital and operational projects.
About you
Excellent communicator with hands-on experience in co-design and participative community engagement. Comfortable running community events and working directly with residents, voluntary and community sector organisations, and social enterprises. A self-starter and natural leader with creative problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively across council services and external organisations to build support and influence stakeholders. Committed to putting the local community at the heart of decision-making and empowering residents to shape their neighbourhoods.
Qualifications
Relevant professional qualifications or equivalent experience in regeneration, urban planning, community development, or related fields are desirable. Line management experience is expected.
