About the Role
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the national regulator for workplace health and safety in Great Britain, dedicated to creating safer, healthier workplaces. We are modernising our services through investment in digital infrastructure and capability to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. We are seeking an exceptional Senior Admin Manager (SAM) to lead operational staff across five offices in the South East.
SAMs drive a culture of teamwork, high performance, and continuous improvement, providing clear roles and responsibilities for Band 6 and Band 5 colleagues. You will foster personal development primarily through Band 5 Team Leaders by coaching, mentoring, and supporting learning and development.
Working alongside the Deputy Head of Operational Support, you will ensure effective delivery of support to regulatory colleagues across Inspection, Investigation, and Specialist Divisions, contributing to HSE’s strategic priorities and business plan objectives.
Key responsibilities include providing strategic leadership and line management to up to four Team Leaders, overseeing the Gas Operational Support function to ensure consistent, timely, and high-quality delivery, managing resources and workforce planning, prioritising and delivering Gas work, collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders, driving continuous improvement, acting as senior escalation point for complex issues, and ensuring governance and alignment with HSE priorities across a geographically dispersed team.
HSE offers a hybrid working model combining home and office work, with an expectation to attend the office or business sites for approximately 60% of the working week. The home office base for this role is London.
Experience
- Proven positive, visible leadership of geographically dispersed teams, with strong communication of direction and priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high performance through others and effectively deploy resources.
- Experience implementing performance and attendance management.
- Practical recent experience managing operational delivery using data and insights to meet strict time and quality service level agreements.
- Confident reporting to key stakeholders.
- Experience leading teams through change and responding calmly to unpredictable demands.
- Sound organisational skills with the ability to prioritise, identify risks, make pragmatic decisions, delegate, and manage workloads.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, able to build consensus and tailor messages.
- Proven ability to foster a culture of inclusion, innovation, collaboration, teamwork, accountability, and celebration of success.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office packages including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.
