About the Role
Join the Government Legal Department (GLD) and provide expert legal advice on nation-changing subjects ranging from healthcare and artificial intelligence to national security and the environment. GLD is the largest provider of legal services across government, supporting the development, design, and implementation of government policies and decisions. You will work on high-profile matters involving regulation, litigation, procurement, and drafting legislation, often under parliamentary and media scrutiny.

GLD lawyers operate within specialist groups including the Advisory Directorate, Commercial Law Group, Employment, and Litigation Group, offering diverse and unique career opportunities. You will advise on a broad spectrum of issues such as national security, cyberbullying, AI, climate change, public procurement, employment law, and high-profile litigation cases up to the Supreme Court.

This role requires holding or being willing to obtain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance and offers the possibility of a non-consolidated DV allowance for eligible roles. Qualifications
Minimum 2:2 honours degree in any subject or equivalent overseas qualification. Qualified to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, or overseas equivalent. Completion of a training contract, pupillage, or qualifying employment is required, or exemption by the relevant professional body. Chartered Legal Executives must meet specific academic requirements as outlined by GLD. Evidence of English proficiency is required if not professionally qualified in England or Wales.

Security Clearance
Applicants must hold or be willing and able to obtain Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. Full UK nationality or dual/multi-nationality with at least one British nationality is required. A 10-year verifiable UK-based footprint with limited absence is typically necessary.
