About the Role
Surrey Registration Service plays a vital role in recording important life events with legal significance, registering approximately 18,000 births, 11,000 deaths, and 3,500 civil marriages and partnerships annually in Surrey. As a Registration Support Officer, you will deliver a statutory service supporting residents at significant moments in their lives. Working under the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953 and related legislation, you will maintain the accuracy and security of registration records, register pages, stock, and daily accounts. This role carries significant legal responsibility requiring exceptional attention to detail, professionalism, and compliance.
You will deputise for the Senior Registrar in registering births, deaths, still-births, and completing preliminaries to marriages and civil partnerships. Responsibilities include using bespoke Registration Systems, electronic diaries, booking systems, managing Excel accounts, submitting statistics to the General Register Office, processing payments for certificate copies, and maintaining accurate records.
Your empathy and dedication will be essential when supporting customers during emotionally charged situations. You will work effectively both independently and within a team, communicating with tact, patience, and professionalism. Full training will be provided, so previous experience of registering births, deaths, or notices is not required.
As a council employee, you must adhere to Data Governance policies and all related procedures for managing personal data and information. Breaches of these policies may result in disciplinary action.
Surrey County Council is undergoing Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) with these posts transferring to the newly established East Surrey Registration District under TUPE arrangements from April 2027.
