About the Role
The Research Support Officer will maintain worm cultures of wildtype and disease model strains and perform tracking experiments to study the behaviour of wild type and disease worms in response to drugs. The role includes assisting with lab management and conducting research as part of the facility’s services. If time permits, the appointee will engage in customer outreach to patient foundations and companies who could benefit from the service. The successful candidate will take an active part in the group, including attending group meetings, training sessions, and contributing to organisational aspects.
Experience
- Basic laboratory procedures including molecular biology (essential)
- C. elegans husbandry including maintaining worm strains, freezing, and crosses (desirable)
- Experience with behavioural assays (desirable)
- Microscopy/imaging of worms (desirable)
- Experience with worm transgenesis (desirable)
- Experience with quantitative data analysis (desirable)
About you
- Knowledge and understanding of cell and/or molecular biology (essential)
- Keen interest in developing skills and experimental methods in worm biology
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English
- High level of motivation and drive
- Evidence of ability to organise and conduct research projects
- Ability to work effectively with researchers from diverse fields and levels, from postgraduate students to professors
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Eagerness to learn new concepts and acquire new skills quickly
- Ability to seek novel and creative solutions to scientific problems
Qualifications
- BSc or equivalent qualification in biological sciences (essential)
- PhD in biological sciences (desirable)
