About the Role
As a Rotational Occupational Therapist, you will be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of your clinical work, managing your own designated caseload as an autonomous practitioner with regular supervision. You will undertake comprehensive occupational therapy assessments including observation, kitchen, washing and dressing, functional, cognitive, home environment, and access assessments. You will organise and conduct access visits, patient assessments, and follow-up home visits, occasionally working as a lone practitioner in domiciliary settings.
You will use problem-oriented medical records to support clinical reasoning and communicate effectively to identify occupational therapy goals with patients. Your role includes planning and implementing individual therapy programs using a variety of treatment options such as disability equipment provision, group therapy, neurology techniques, graded activity programs, relaxation and anxiety management, advice, education, and therapeutic handling.
Monitoring and evaluating treatment progress, modifying interventions as needed, and maintaining comprehensive written records according to departmental standards are key responsibilities. You will ensure valid informed consent is obtained and work within legal frameworks when patients lack capacity. Effective communication with patients and carers, including those with complex communication difficulties, is essential.
You will participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to share patient progress and assist in discharge planning. You will be responsible for the safe and competent use and provision of adaptive equipment in line with departmental and external guidelines.
In addition to clinical duties, you will demonstrate good time management and organisational skills, respond to interruptions, make timely referrals, delegate tasks appropriately, and contribute to clinical governance and service development. You will support induction and orientation of new staff and provide clinical guidance.
Educational responsibilities include participating in in-service training, teaching and assessing students and therapy assistants, providing clinical supervision, and contributing to research, audits, and evidence-based projects.
Professional development is encouraged through maintaining registration, engaging in continuous professional development, completing mandatory training, and participating in appraisal processes. You will role model Trust values and ensure adherence to Trust policies at all times.
This role requires flexibility as job duties may change according to service needs, always performed under supervision or within Trust policies.
Experience
Previous occupational therapy experience is desirable but not explicitly required; however, you must be able to manage your own caseload and work autonomously with supervision.
About you
You should be a responsible, organised, and adaptable professional with excellent communication skills, able to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and with patients who may have complex communication needs. You must demonstrate good time management, clinical reasoning, and the ability to prioritise workload. A commitment to professional development and adherence to Trust values and policies is essential.
Qualifications
You must be a registered Occupational Therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council and comply with the College of Occupational Therapy and HCPC codes of professional conduct. You should maintain an up-to-date CPD portfolio and complete all mandatory training within required timescales.
