About the Role
Join the Southern Region of Network Rail, covering Wessex, Sussex, and Kent, one of the busiest and most dynamic parts of the UK railway network. We are seeking a Scheme Project Manager to join the Wessex Infrastructure Change Team on a 12-month fixed-term contract with the potential to become permanent. You will deliver a diverse portfolio of projects aimed at improving business operations, including people and competence initiatives, process improvements, organisational change, and business transformation.
Working collaboratively, you will shape and deliver projects from concept through to implementation, ensuring safe, effective delivery aligned with business objectives. Your role will be vital in helping Wessex Infrastructure evolve and improve, delivering meaningful change that supports our people and the wider organisation.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead projects from concept to implementation, delivering improvements that support the business, our people, and customers.
- Manage a diverse portfolio including organisational and process improvements, capability and competence initiatives, and business performance projects.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and develop practical solutions to complex challenges.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the organisation to achieve successful outcomes.
- Facilitate collaboration between operational, technical, and corporate teams to support project delivery and decision-making.
- Communicate progress, risks, and key decisions clearly to stakeholders.
- Manage projects safely and effectively through all lifecycle stages, ensuring delivery to scope, budget, and timescales.
- Monitor and manage project risks, opportunities, and change controls proactively.
- Produce clear project reporting and performance information to support governance and decision-making.
- Manage project budgets and resources responsibly to ensure value for money.
- Promote best practice in project management and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
- Capture and share lessons learned to improve future project delivery.
- Maintain compliance with Network Rail standards, governance requirements, and the Investment Competence Framework.
Experience
- Proven experience delivering projects, workstreams, or business change initiatives in complex organisational environments.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across teams and organisational levels.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyse information, identify options, and support informed decision-making.
- Ability to plan, organise, and prioritise competing activities to achieve successful outcomes.
- Experience managing risks, issues, and project delivery activities.
- Collaborative approach with a willingness to challenge constructively and support continuous improvement.

Qualifications
- Desirable: Experience working within a project management environment or recognised project management methodology.
- Knowledge of Network Rail project governance and delivery frameworks is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Oracle Projects or similar project management and financial systems is preferred.
- Membership of, or working towards membership of, a recognised professional body such as APM.
- Degree, HNC/HND, project management qualification, or equivalent professional experience.
- Six Sigma Yellow Belt qualification is a plus.
