About the Role
Join the Engineering Enablement team at the heart of Quote Modernisation, one of the most significant engineering transformations Tesco has undertaken in recent years. Quote is the mission-critical pricing and promotions platform serving over 28 million UK shoppers every week across all channels, with global reach on the horizon. Our current monolithic architecture and ageing technology stack present barriers to productivity, stability, and innovation, which we are actively addressing.
The Quote Modernisation programme is built on five strategic pillars: architectural modernisation, technology stack revitalisation, quality and resilience, delivery acceleration, and engineering excellence. The Engineering Enablement team is central to this transformation, operating under an 'Enablement First' principle by laying the foundations before broader teams build on them. This includes creating the Micronaut application template, standardised logging and metrics libraries, feature flagging infrastructure, and quality gates that engineers rely on daily.
This role sits at the intersection of core Java engineering and developer experience. You will write high-quality production Java code while focusing on the experience of engineers building on your work. Responsibilities include enhancing tooling clarity, speeding feedback loops, improving CI/CD pipeline robustness, and simplifying onboarding for new engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain shared, standardised components underpinning Quote Modernisation such as the Micronaut application template, feature flagging library, canary releases, and logging/metrics libraries.
- Drive adoption of these components across engineering teams, collaborating closely with pilot teams.
- Establish and automate quality gates covering code coverage, static analysis, performance, and security.
- Champion schema-first development and standardised build tooling to reduce inconsistency.
- Support migration from self-managed infrastructure (Couchbase, Kafka) to managed cloud services.
- Contribute to canary release infrastructure and feature flagging capabilities.
- Identify and remove friction in engineering workflows including slow pipelines, flaky tests, unclear documentation, and onboarding challenges.
- Champion continuous improvement of the inner developer loop: build times, test feedback, and local development setup.
- Write clear, concise, and up-to-date documentation including runbooks and architectural decision records.
- Use data such as DORA metrics and developer experience surveys to advocate for improvements.
- Treat the CI/CD pipeline as a product, measuring and improving its performance.
- Design and implement robust, scalable systems using deep JVM and Java ecosystem expertise, including modern Java concurrency with virtual threads.
- Write test-driven features focusing on mitigating real-world risks.
- Apply SOLID principles and cohesive design for maintainable software.
- Support production systems, resolve incidents, and conduct blameless post-incident reviews.
- Mentor and support fellow engineers, fostering continuous learning and psychological safety.
- Share knowledge through code reviews, documentation, and internal talks.
- Collaborate with product stakeholders and engineers to shape features and architecture.
- Prototype and evaluate new tools and technologies focused on developer productivity and quality.
Benefits include:
- Holiday starting at 25 days plus a personal day and bank holidays
- Private medical insurance
- 26 weeks maternity and adoption leave at full pay (after 1 year’s service), followed by statutory pay
- 6 weeks fully paid paternity leave
- Free 24/7 virtual GP service and Employee Assistance Programme for mental wellbeing support
Experience
- Strong experience with Java 8, including modern language features and JVM internals.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Proficiency with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Proven ability to design and scale distributed systems.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
- Exposure to reactive programming paradigms and willingness to adopt virtual threads.
- Experience owning or materially improving CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure Pipelines).
- Experience building or contributing to shared internal tooling, platform capabilities, or libraries.
- Familiarity with DORA metrics and using data to drive engineering improvements.
About You
- You care about the developer experience as much as the build output, valuing fast feedback loops, clear error messages, and smooth onboarding.
- You have a track record of identifying toil or friction in engineering workflows and taking ownership to fix them.
- Comfortable writing and maintaining developer documentation including READMEs, runbooks, and architectural decision records.
- A collaborative mentor who fosters a culture of continuous learning and psychological safety.
- Able to communicate effectively with product stakeholders and engineers across teams.
- Enthusiastic about prototyping and evaluating new tools and technologies to improve productivity and quality.
Qualifications
- Bonus: Experience with Micronaut or building standardised application templates and golden-path tooling.
- Bonus: Experience with eCommerce, pricing, or high-throughput API systems.
