About the Role
Digital Catapult is seeking a Senior Responsible Innovation Manager to embed responsible practice across the organisation and its partners. This role is ideal for someone confident working at the intersection of innovation, deep tech, and societal impact. You will bring domain expertise to guide how the organisation addresses responsible technology innovation, engaging closely with technologists, partner organisations, legal teams, and executive stakeholders.
The role covers responsible innovation approaches towards emerging technologies such as AI, creative technologies, and quantum computing, both internally within innovation and research projects, and externally in support of partner organisations. You will operationalise responsible innovation and enable the practical application of ethics in developing transformative and deep technologies across complex industries.
As the regulatory and sociotechnical landscape evolves rapidly, you will track these changes closely and translate them into actionable recommendations to inform organisational strategy and build capability.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as subject matter expert and primary advisor on responsible technology innovation, supporting senior leadership and legal stakeholders.
- Bring a risk-aware, human-centred, and responsible perspective to how the organisation works with industry and develops technology.
- Lead and champion responsible innovation practices across Digital Catapult programmes, fostering a culture of responsibility.
- Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to project leads and teams to integrate ethics, risk management, and harm mitigation from the outset.
- Conduct risk assessments, consultations, and training services for organisations including startups and enterprise partners.
- Advise on the responsible initial application of novel technologies and novel uses of established technologies.
- Collaborate with academic partners on responsible innovation and technology risk research.
- Facilitate internal learning to build awareness and practical capability among colleagues, innovators, and technologists.
- Monitor and enable compliance with responsible technology innovation standards, regulations, best practices, and emerging industry requirements.
- Examine socio-technical impacts of emerging technologies across complex systems and sectors.
- Contribute to Digital Catapult's external position on responsible technology innovation through industry engagement and published work.

Requirements

Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Social Sciences, Design, Law, or related disciplines focused on technology ethics or governance.
- Proven experience developing and implementing responsible technology frameworks, policies, or guidelines within organisations.
- Demonstrated ability to embed ethical, legal, and social considerations into the design, development, and deployment of AI or data-driven technical solutions.
- Experience engaging and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including design, data science, engineering, legal, and business to deliver responsible innovation outcomes.
- Confidence in communicating and advocating responsible technology practices to both technical and non-technical audiences, including delivering training or awareness programmes.
- Up-to-date knowledge of emerging trends, technologies, and regulations in deep technology and responsible innovation, especially in Artificial Intelligence.
- Experience producing robust, evidence-based artefacts such as guidelines, checklists, or impact assessments to support responsible technology implementation and governance.

About You
You are a strategic thinker with a strong ethical compass and the ability to translate complex regulatory and sociotechnical issues into practical organisational strategies. You thrive working collaboratively across diverse teams and are passionate about fostering a culture of responsible innovation. You keep abreast of fast-moving technology landscapes and are confident advising senior stakeholders and partners.

Qualifications
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field is required. Additional certifications or training related to technology ethics, governance, or responsible innovation are advantageous but not mandatory.
