About the Role
The Payments Service team is at the heart of Tesco Technology, serving 28 million shoppers in the UK and abroad. We deliver HTTP services that reliably manage payments at global scale, 24 hours a day, every day. Our systems handle 100 million transactions and billions of events per day, processing a billion pounds every week. At the core are APIs managing various payment methods including cash, card, and gift card across stores, fuel stations, and online. We also support wallet behaviours, repeat payments, refunds, and identity checks.
As a Senior Software Developer at Tesco, you will be responsible for the entire development and support process of software programmes. Your work simplifies complex tasks, saving time, effort, and money, and can redefine normal business operations. While day-to-day coding is a key part of the role, you will also lead design and architecture efforts and mentor your team.
The technology stack includes .NET/C#, Java, Cassandra, Docker, HAProxy, and Azure DevOps. We follow a Test-Driven Development (TDD) and 'you build it, you run it' DevOps culture. Automation and continuous improvement in testing and deployment are key priorities.
You will be responsible for developing scalable frontend systems, producing test-driven features, applying software design principles, working with product stakeholders, breaking down work for incremental delivery, facilitating system design discussions, supporting production systems, sharing knowledge, mentoring others, and producing proofs of concept to evaluate new tools.
We offer a comprehensive benefits package including 25 days holiday plus a personal day and bank holidays, private medical insurance, generous parental leave, free 24/7 virtual GP service, and employee assistance programmes to support mental wellbeing. Tesco champions a flexible working culture and is committed to an inclusive and accessible recruitment process.
