About the Role
Ripjar was founded by veterans of GCHQ to bring national security-grade intelligence tools to the fight against financial crime. Our AI-native software and data fusion products are used globally by governments, banks, and enterprises to automate the detection, investigation, and monitoring of serious financial crime, including money laundering and terrorist financing. Ripjar’s Engineering team builds software products that make the world safer by mixing creativity with technology and engineering excellence to solve unique problems.

As a Staff Engineer, you will be an expert in one or more technology domains within Ripjar’s product set, primarily working on the Labyrinth Screening SaaS platform, which serves over 120 businesses worldwide and is rapidly growing. This role requires exceptional technical knowledge, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of software design and development principles.

You will collaborate across engineering teams, working closely with engineering managers and technical stakeholders to guide sound technical decisions and provide oversight. You will also partner with senior technical leaders to shape Ripjar’s technology roadmap. Your initial focus will be scaling the SaaS platform to handle increased companies, data feeds, data items, and users, driving necessary architectural, testing, process, and cultural changes to achieve this.

Key tasks include owning software design and technology for a technical area of Labyrinth Screening, collaborating with teams and customers to deliver high-quality software, incorporating engineering principles into organisational decision-making, leading engineering standards and design patterns, and ensuring consistent application of architectural decisions across Ripjar’s products.

Experience
- Deep and broad experience in building and designing software as an engineer and technical leader.
- Experience working with big data or large scale data processing systems.
- Concrete knowledge of software design patterns, industry best practices, and architecture design.
- Demonstrated expertise in deploying software into production environments.
- Experience designing distributed systems managing extensive data and workloads.
- Ability to quickly comprehend complex scenarios, unravel uncertainty, and articulate complex system architectures.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and engage wider technical teams to drive growth and career progression.
- Clear communication skills in written, verbal, and visual formats tailored to diverse audiences.

Technical Skills
- Expertise in Software Engineering.
- Strong working knowledge of one or more technologies from the stack including JavaScript, ElasticSearch, OpenSearch, MongoDB, Apache Kafka, EKS, and Kubernetes.
- Experience with microservices architectures.
- Demonstrable experience in scaling SaaS platforms, particularly evolving and improving system architecture.
