About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on, proactive Team Leader to manage the day-to-day operations of our busy two-partner GP practice with a patient list of approximately 3,500. Reporting directly to the Practice Manager, you will be the operational bridge between the clinical team, administrative staff, and management. You will line manage the reception and administration team, ensuring smooth workflows, high standards of patient care, and a supportive working environment.
Your main duties will include overseeing daily practice operations such as opening and closing procedures, appointment book optimisation, patient recall systems, and troubleshooting real-time issues including patient concerns and operational challenges. You will ensure compliance with practice policies, CQC standards, and health and safety requirements.
As a leader, you will manage recruitment, induction, appraisals, performance management, rotas, leave, and sickness absence for your team. You will motivate and support your staff, fostering a culture where they feel valued and empowered. You will also address any team conflicts promptly and fairly.
In addition to leadership responsibilities, you will undertake day-to-day administrative tasks alongside your team, including patient registrations, medical records management, and correspondence processing. You will provide cover for reception or admin duties during busy periods or staff absences.
You will work closely with the Practice Manager to provide feedback on operational challenges and successes, translate management decisions into clear actions, and advocate for your team’s needs. Collaboration with GPs, the Physician Associate, Pharmacist, and locum staff will be essential to ensure seamless integration of clinical and administrative functions.
With a manageable patient list, you will identify inefficiencies and implement practical improvements such as refining triage processes, updating patient communications, and streamlining repetitive administrative tasks. You will also contribute to practice-wide projects aimed at enhancing patient experience and staff wellbeing.
Experience
Proven experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a healthcare or administrative setting is highly desirable. Experience managing teams, handling operational challenges, and working in a GP practice environment will be advantageous.
About you
You are a proactive, hands-on leader with excellent organisational and communication skills. You are able to motivate and support a diverse team, manage competing priorities, and maintain a calm and professional approach under pressure. You have a strong commitment to delivering high standards of patient care and staff wellbeing. You are adaptable, approachable, and able to work collaboratively across clinical and administrative teams.
Qualifications
There are no specific formal qualifications required for this role, but relevant management or healthcare administration qualifications will be beneficial. A good level of IT literacy and knowledge of healthcare systems is expected.
