About the Role
Havering SEND Service is a multi-disciplinary team comprising Educational Psychologists, Advisory Teachers, Preschool specialists, SEND case officers and various specialist staff. The team works collaboratively to support children and young people with SEND, including the schools and educational settings they attend. We are excited to offer the position of Advisory Teacher - Communication and Interaction within the Communication & Interaction Support Team, a new role supporting schools and educational settings across the London Borough of Havering.
The Advisory Teacher will play a key role within the restructured SEND Education Support Service, enhancing capacity and expertise within the Speech, Language and Social Communication Support Team to achieve positive outcomes for children, families and schools. The team includes Advisory Teachers and Communication and Interaction Education Advisors who provide advice, support, training and model interventions and strategies.
The Advisory Teacher will support schools, colleges and settings through Communication & Interaction Planning and Referral meetings, work closely with specialist staff including Educational Psychologists and Speech and Language Therapists to embed the Team Around the School delivery model, and professionally support Communication and Interaction Education Advisors. These advisors provide direct work and advice, including observations, modelling interventions and strategies to staff, as well as training, resources and written support plans.
The role also involves indirect, consultancy-based multi-agency working with schools and parents to achieve goals set out in Speech and Language Therapy reports, offering a solution-focused, collaborative approach to ensure educational settings have the skills to effectively support children and young people with communication and social interaction differences, enabling engagement and access to learning.

Experience
- Proven experience working with children and young people with communication and interaction differences, whether as a SENCo, teacher or speech and language therapist
- Experience coordinating and delivering a range of speech, language and social communication interventions, programmes, strategies and developing resources
- Knowledge of communication and interaction provision, target setting and skill development to support functional, social and academic learning
- Understanding of the SEND Code of Practice (2015), Equality Act (2010), Suspension and Permanent Exclusion Guidance (2023)
