About the Role
The London Borough of Harrow is seeking an Allocations Officer who will be responsible for the allocation of Council housing stock and nominations to registered providers (RPs), as well as the administration of all special schemes, void control, and the provision of statistical information. The role involves ensuring that properties are allocated correctly and promptly in line with the Housing Act Part VII and the Council’s Housing Allocation Policy, with the aim of minimising any financial impact on the Council. The post holder will also be expected to provide advice and assistance to applicants, enabling them to make informed and effective choices regarding accommodation opportunities both within and outside of Harrow. Additionally, the role includes offering practical support to households in making the necessary arrangements to relocate to permanent and settled accommodation.
Experience
Educated to degree level or equivalent or has the equivalent relevant work experience. Experience of working with homeless people and those in housing need. Working knowledge of the Housing Act Part VII and the Council’s allocation and homeless placement policies. Awareness of the Homelessness Act (as amended) and Suitability Order in relation to the suitability of allocation and appeals. Working knowledge of information technology systems relating to the housing register and Choice Based Lettings system and actively contribute to the ongoing development of these systems. Experience of assessing and interviewing vulnerable people, extracting sensitive information and providing excellent customer care.
About you
Ability to work within a stressful and pressurised environment and deal with vulnerable and demanding applicants on a daily basis regarding their housing which can place both the postholder and applicant under emotional stress. Ability to work unsupervised, prioritise workloads and achieve targets and deadlines. Ability to interview applicants skilfully and sensitively to elicit as much information as possible and give the appropriate advice. Good IT skills, including databases to log and manage information.
