About the Role
Join Southwark Council’s bold, values-led Planning & Growth team and be part of one of London’s most ambitious regeneration programmes. As a Building Control Inspector (Class 2 A-F), you will play a key role in shaping a borough undergoing significant development and innovation. You will work on multi-billion-pound projects including Elephant and Castle and Canada Water, contributing to the delivery of 11,000 new council homes.
Your work will involve engaging with cutting-edge construction methods and landmark commercial developments, ensuring compliance with the latest building safety legislation. You will act as a technical specialist, providing expert advice to developers, architects, councillors, and internal stakeholders, while overseeing the delivery of the dangerous structures service.
Key responsibilities include processing and determining building control applications for buildings up to 18m, ensuring compliance with the Building Safety Act 2022 and Fire Safety Act 2021, attending client and design meetings, collaborating with statutory bodies, and driving quality assurance through ISO9001 and building safety governance frameworks. You will also contribute to digital transformation initiatives using systems such as Uniform, SAP, and the Modern Data Platform.

Experience
- Proven track record managing applications and inspections for mid-rise residential and commercial buildings
- Demonstrable experience in building control within a city or urban context, including large-scale residential and commercial applications
- Deep understanding of statutory building control processes, legislation, and dangerous structures
- Strong IT skills including MS Office and building control systems
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders and delivering pragmatic technical advice
About you
- Chartered professional with corporate membership of one or more of the following: RICS, CABE, IStructE, ICE, CIOB, IMechE, CIAT, RIBA or IFE
- Confident communicator able to engage with developers, engineers, statutory bodies, councillors, and internal teams
- Committed to continuous professional development with a resident-first mindset
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail and outcomes
- Enthusiastic about contributing to Southwark’s urban regeneration and growth
- Comfortable with flexible home working and travel across the borough
Qualifications
- Must hold a Class 2A-F professional Building Controls Qualification
- Expert knowledge of Building Regulations, technical construction solutions, and relevant legislative frameworks
- Understanding of urban planning issues and strategic planning approaches
