About the Role

We are seeking an experienced strategic leader to drive excellence in the local area education system. This role involves leading associated services and teams, key partnerships, and overseeing all relevant policy, strategy, and performance. The aim is to develop an education system that is inclusive, equitable, responsive to the needs of diverse communities, and relentless in narrowing gaps in pupil attainment.

The Deputy Director, Children’s Services (Learning and Inclusion) will be the lead council officer responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of all statutory education duties from early years to post-16 education. This includes aligning with local needs and corporate goals such as Southwark 2030.

You will:
- Lead the ongoing development of the council’s approach to learning and inclusion
- Ensure collaboration across the local education system, including leaders, schools, and settings
- Lead implementation of national, regional, and local regulations, policies, and strategies
- Act as the lead officer for the council’s responsibilities regarding council-maintained schools
- Promote progression in education, development, and skills for all children and young people

As a member of the Children’s Services Leadership Team, you will contribute to the overall management, development, integration, and coordination of Children’s Services in Southwark, deputising for the Director of Children’s Services as required.

Requirements

Experience
- Extensive experience and proven track record working with school and partnership leaders to deliver improvement across the education system
- Proven management experience in a large, complex organisation
- Strong track record in service improvement and raising standards for all children, particularly the most vulnerable groups

- Inspiring and strategic leader with vision, determination, and drive to lead change in a fast-paced, diverse borough
- Ability to lead, inspire, and influence staff, partners, and stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills and understanding of effective, high-quality practice
- Up-to-date awareness and knowledge of professional standards, policy developments, and relevant legislation
