About the Role
The Financial Model Quality Assurance Analyst role is based within the Analytical Solutions Team (AST) at the Government Actuary’s Department (GAD). You will be part of the Models, Development & Assurance team, which delivers high-quality models and systems to support government decision-making. This role focuses on the assurance of Excel-based and financial models, which are critical tools used across government for actuarial, financial projection, budgeting, valuation, and policy analysis purposes.

You will review, test, and improve the quality of these models, helping clients identify and manage model risks, improve transparency, strengthen controls, and build confidence that models are fit for purpose. The role involves examining model logic, formulae, inputs, assumptions, outputs, controls, and audit trails to assess robustness and suitability. You will work collaboratively with analysts, actuaries, policy teams, and client organisations to deliver independent and proportionate assurance.

Responsibilities include defining model requirements, reviewing documentation and governance, testing calculations and sensitivities, assessing assumptions, and preparing clear assurance reports for both technical and non-technical audiences. You will also contribute to developing GAD’s wider model quality assurance capability by sharing good practice, improving templates and guidance, supporting colleagues, and promoting a culture of effective model risk management.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a government department that operates like a consultancy, providing expert actuarial and specialist analysis, advice, and assurance to the public sector.

Requirements

Experience
- Experience developing, reviewing, or analysing complex Excel-based financial models used for investment, regulatory, commercial, or public policy decisions is essential.
- Relevant experience in financial modelling, corporate finance, actuarial, pensions or investment modelling, infrastructure or project finance, or economic appraisal is highly desirable.

About you
- Proactive and detail-focused with strong analytical skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams including analysts, actuaries, and policy professionals.
- Strong communication skills to prepare clear, concise, and accessible assurance outputs.
- Commitment to promoting good practice and continuous improvement in model quality assurance.
- Comfortable managing multiple assurance projects to agreed timescales and quality standards.

Qualifications
- No specific qualifications are mandated, but relevant professional experience and technical skills in financial and Excel-based modelling are essential.
- Familiarity with quality assurance standards, including GAD guidance, professional standards, and government good practice such as the AQuA Book, is advantageous.
