About the Role
The General Practice Assistant (GPA) plays a vital role in supporting the smooth running of the practice and assisting GPs with clinical and administrative tasks. Responsibilities include sorting and prioritising clinical post for the GP, signposting relevant post to other professionals such as clinical pharmacists, and extracting key information from clinical letters for coding and patient notes. The GPA arranges appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments for patients. They prepare patients prior to GP consultations by taking brief histories and basic clinical readings such as blood pressure, ECGs, urine dip tests, and phlebotomy. The role also involves completing basic non-opinion forms and core elements of forms for GP approval, including insurance, mortgage, and benefits agency forms. The GPA explains treatment procedures to patients and assists the GP in liaising with outside agencies, for example arranging on-call doctor advice or admissions while the GP continues consultations. Additional support includes helping with immunisations and wound care. The post-holder is expected to promote and maintain their own and others’ health, safety, and security in line with the Practice Health & Safety Policy, including using personal security systems, identifying and managing risks, maintaining infection control procedures, keeping work areas tidy and hazard-free, and reporting potential risks.
