About the Role
The Global Disaster Resilience Centre (GDRC) at the University of Huddersfield is a world-leading multidisciplinary centre dedicated to enhancing the resilience of communities and nations against disasters through research, education, and advocacy. The centre collaborates with stakeholders at global, national, and local levels to implement strategies aligned with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, adopted by 187 countries worldwide. GDRC focuses on tackling disaster risk factors and emerging risks, supporting local communities and authorities, and bridging the gap between policy and science to inform decision-making.
With growing populations and infrastructure, exposure to hazards is increasing globally. When disasters strike, communities require physical, economic, and social rebuilding that proactively reduces vulnerability and protects people and their environment. GDRC’s vision is a society capable of resisting or adapting to hazards while maintaining essential functions.
The centre undertakes internationally outstanding, innovative research, secures prestigious grants, produces quality publications, influences political, economic, and social decisions, informs professional practice, raises awareness, develops skills to tackle disasters, and facilitates knowledge transfer to government, market, and professionals. It also attracts high-calibre students to conduct world-class research in emerging areas related to disaster resilience.
GDRC defines a resilient built environment as the design, development, and management of context-sensitive buildings, spaces, and places that reduce hazard vulnerability and enable society to continue functioning economically and socially during hazard events.
