About the Role
The Home Office is one of the largest and most complex government departments, responsible for priorities including border security, migration, policing and homeland security. This senior leadership role is central to ensuring Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, and Directors General have the insight, assurance, and governance needed to make informed decisions, manage risk, and maintain performance across the Department’s agenda.

The postholder will lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 15-20 staff covering governance, planning, corporate reporting and analysis, fostering a high-performing and supportive culture. As a core member of the Performance, Risk, Assurance & Governance directorate’s senior leadership team, you will lead the Home Office Performance System, including monthly performance stocktakes and regular reporting to Executive Committee, Departmental Board and Ministers.

Key responsibilities include leading projects to deliver insight across performance, risk, compliance and value for money, continuously improving the cross-departmental performance system through digital technology, and providing excellent support to Non-Executive Directors including recruitment and ongoing engagement.

You will also lead the operation of the Department’s core governance forums, ensuring the Departmental Board (chaired by the Home Secretary) functions effectively, supporting the Executive Committee (chaired by the Permanent Secretary) as a forum for collective leadership and decision-making, and overseeing the Audit, Risk and Assurance Committee as well as Investment and People Committees. Additionally, you will lead key audit reviews of performance and governance arrangements across the Department.

This role requires excellent judgement, resilience, political awareness and confidence to operate across a complex organisational landscape, with the opportunity to shape how the Department assesses performance, responds to risk, and strengthens governance at the highest levels.

Experience
Proven senior leadership experience, including setting clear direction, leading through others, and building the capability, confidence and resilience of a multidisciplinary team.
Strong record of leading delivery projects across organisational boundaries in a complex political environment.
Experience of audit and assurance work, and management of senior governance forums is desirable.
