Hours
Full Time with option for compressed hours working. Part-time working is also suitable with a minimum of 3 days per week due to business requirements. Some roles may require occasional out-of-hours work with additional allowance.

Salary
£62,732 - £69,006 (National) / £66,732 - £73,406 (London). New entrants start on the minimum of the pay range. Home Office contributes £18,173 towards Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme membership.

About the Role
We are seeking passionate engineers to join our Shared Applications Service (SAS) team within the Home Office. You will work in agile multidisciplinary teams alongside over 200 engineers in a modern cloud environment using the latest technologies. Our team’s purpose is to bring technical understanding in-house for over 600 Home Office applications.

As a Senior Developer, you will be key to product delivery, developing core components and selecting appropriate technologies. Your expertise will allow you to operate with autonomy and make technical decisions. You will write clean, secure code following test-driven development, ensuring code is open and reusable.

You will mentor and lead other engineers, support recruitment and assessment activities, and help prioritise technical tasks across your team.

Technologies used include:
- Backend: Node.js, Python, REST/GraphQL APIs
- Frontend: React, JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular
- Data: MongoDB, Redis
- DevOps: AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Ansible, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines
- AI: Python, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI

You will be involved in creating and maintaining critical public services such as identity verification, visa applications, policing, counter-terrorism, and border protection systems.

Working arrangements allow a combination of office and home-based working, with a minimum of 60% office presence where applicable.

Experience
Proven experience designing scalable, maintainable, and secure software solutions using modern JavaScript-based architectures for web applications and services.
Developing high-quality, testable code using JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frameworks, following engineering standards.
Defining and implementing automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end) to ensure software quality.
Integrating and building services across front-end and back-end components, ensuring reliable deployment and interoperability.
Managing application data effectively, including APIs, state management, and persistence layers.
Supporting live JavaScript-based services by diagnosing issues, improving performance, and maintaining stability in production.

Demonstrable skills aligned with the Home Office Government Digital and Data Profession Career Framework and SFIA Levels:
- Software design (SWDN) - Level 4
- Programming/software development (PROG) - Level 3
- Testing (TEST) - Level 3
- Systems integration and build (SINT) - Level 4
- Data management (DATM) - Level 4
- Application support (ASUP) - Level 4

Security clearance (Security Check - SC) is required, normally requiring 5 years UK residency in the past 5 years.
