About the Role
We are seeking a Higher Scientist to join the Vaccines Function within the Science Research and Innovation group at the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This permanent, full-time role is based in South Mimms and contributes to global public health through cutting-edge virology and molecular biology research.

The MHRA Polio group is a world-leading laboratory with WHO Collaborating Centre and WHO Global Specialised Polio Laboratory Network status, playing a key role in the WHO Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). You will work within the WHO Global Specialised Polio Laboratory in the Research and Development function, supporting immunisation programs and surveillance systems.

Your responsibilities will include laboratory-based work to improve methods and analytical algorithms for detecting and characterizing polio and novel oral polio viruses in clinical samples using Long read sequencing (Nanopore technology) and short read sequencing (Illumina systems). You will perform molecular assays such as RT-PCR, RT-qPCR, and next generation sequencing analysis, followed by bioinformatic analysis and single nucleotide variant calling.

Additionally, you will develop and validate viral Internal Process Control (IPC) materials, perform spiking experiments, and test IPCs for fit-for-purpose use. You will also contribute to multi-pathogen detection strategies in wastewater samples to aid early detection of human pathogens and pandemic preparedness.

Excellent coordination and communication with teams across the Research & Development, Standards Lifecycle, and Control Testing functions will be essential to support analytical requirements for statutory functions.

Experience
- Implementing, developing, and optimising laboratory procedures and conducting research experiments with accurate record keeping and reporting.
- Working independently and collaboratively within teams, demonstrating good time-management and attention to detail.
- Molecular and cell-based assays related to viral diseases and virus characterisation including nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR, and sequencing.
- Statistical analysis and interpretation of large complex data sets, producing clear reports and scientific manuscripts.
- Knowledge of biosafety regulations for working with human and animal infectious samples (CL2/3).

Qualifications
- BSc in a relevant scientific field (MSc desirable) or equivalent experience with evidence of research and development.
- Skilled in molecular assays applicable to viral diseases, including nucleic acid extraction and sequencing methods.
- Highly skilled in cell culture-based assays including virus titration.
- Understanding of biosafety and health and safety standards related to infectious agents.
